Three counties hope to salvage $88M solar project by borrowing more money, officials say

Three counties have a solution to salvage an $88-million-dollar solar project that went bust: borrow more millions to pump into the project and hope it will eventually turn a profit and ease the pain to taxpayers, officials said.

Some officials view the solution as damage control. Others are calling it a repeat of a mistake, one they will fight to avoid.

Freeholders in Sussex, Morris and Somerset counties will vote on settlement agreements this week that would end multiple lawsuits and get the projects back on track, officials said.

But there will be opposition -- and some have even called for federal authorities to investigate where some of the millions went when the project fizzled.

The settlement agreements are a choice to opt for "stability over uncertainty and chaos" that could result from future years of litigation, said John Eskilson, the Sussex County administrator, who unveiled some key aspects of the coming settlement on Friday.

I would like to salvage my losing streak at Las Vegas by borrowing more money. But some folks might think that’s just stupid.

I am not completely against solar, but could we possibly restrict solar projects to where they would make any sense at all? New Jersey is not a good candidate for solar, except for trees.

The appropriate saying is “throwing good money after bad”.

Even at 4 kWh / m2 / day and 15% efficiency I would need a 23x23 ft panel (45.7 m2 total) to provide 10,000 kWh in a year. I wonder if that map assumes that you can always keep your panel perpendicular to the sun or if it is just perpendicular to the noon sun.

If I were building a new house I would probably include solar into it because Obama's war on coal, oil, natural gas, wood, enriched uranium, yak manure and anything else you can burn to provide heat and light will ensure that costs will only go up in the future.

Sometimes the only thing you can do is just laugh at these people...if you try to figure them out you make yourself just as crazy as they are. Seriously - "hope to salvage project by borrowing more money" ... just laugh!

Same here, market it properly and you could have something work out. What’s wrong with setting it up in Arizona or Nevada, for instance?
