By Karen Tumulty and Alice Crites February 22 In 1999, Columba Bush, the famously private wife of then-Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, was detained and fined by federal customs officials for misrepresenting the amount of clothing and jewelry she had bought while on a solo five-day shopping spree in Paris.

The incident left the Florida first lady deeply mortified and her husband politically chagrined. Jeb Bush said the first lady had misled customs officials because she did not want him to know that she had spent about $19,000 on the trip.

“The embarrassment I felt made me ashamed to face my family and friends,” Columba Bush said in a July 1999 speech to the Central Florida Make-a-Wish Foundation, not long after the incident. “It was the worst feeling I’ve ever had in my life.”

The ordeal did not stop her from spending freely, however. Less than a year later, she took out a loan to buy $42,311.70 worth of jewelry on a single day, according to records filed with the state of Florida by Mayors Jewelers.

Jeb is a threat because he is not an organizational member of the Tribe even as he shares the ideology of the tribe. Power is everything. Policy and ideology are used in support of Power. The ultimate question is Lenin's question, Who, Whom? Who is to hold the power? The answer is- the ones asking the question, not any others. That is why NAZIs fought Communists so bitterly and why Communists fought Trotskyists. When the one group controls all then they subdivide and who? whom? is again the question.

Latina version of Moochelle?

Nope. Michelle spends taxpayer money. Funny how WaPo hasn't made anything of the fact that Michelle landed a no-show job paying $400K per year at a hospital after Obama was elected senator. Upon which Obama helped land a multi-million dollar earmark for that hospital. After Obama became president, Michelle quit and the position was eliminated.

A LOAN to buy $42,000 worth of jewelry? Good heavens! At that price tag, if she couldn’t put it on a credit card or pay cash, she shouldn’t have purchased it! That’s 2 cars, for heaven’s sake!

Personally, I don't think wealthy people who spend money within their means are necessarily greedy. Some are some aren't. Greed exists among the middle class and poor also.

My beef is that the media hones in on one and not the other. And the other spends far more. Complete hypocrisy.

My Sentiments exactly. I don’t want to vote for Jeb Bush, but they are plowing the field for dirt that can grow weeds—pretty obvious that they will prepare the garden for every Republican candidate because they don’t have a clear leader to target yet. The reporterettes stated: “While spouses are not on the ballot, they too find their lifestyles the focus of curiosity — and, frequently, partisan attack. Americans view a candidate’s family as an indicator of how closely connected he or she is to average people.” Of course they are talking about all of those other partisan hacks! Not them—such hypocrites!

They are just added charges......in a WAY they are loans because they go thru a third party underwriter, but I never heard anyone called them “loans”.

So we are now examining the candidates' financial transactions from 1999?

The important difference between the two stories…

The reporters investigating Jeb need not ever worry about having their
earthly remains rolled up in a carpet and dumped in Fort Marcy Park.

We have heard who the designers are but not a word about what her clothing/jewelry cost and whether or not she actually bought it.
