New ‘smart gun’ could be the weapon of the future, and it’s as Canadian as maple syrup
National Post ^ | February 20, 2015 | Ashley Csanady

It looks like something out of a semi-futuristic post-apocalypse movie: A hybrid of traditional weaponry with digital scopes attached and the ability to morph from a rifle into a shotgun into a grenade launcher.

Except it’s the next generation of armed warfare, improved with lessons from Afghanistan and other recent incursions — and it’s as Canadian as maple syrup.

It’s still a prototype, so it’s a long way from being in the field, but the new “smart gun” being developed with Colt Canada could one day replace the C7, the standard military weapon that’s almost identical to the M16 everyone knows from the movies.

Since 2008, the Department of National Defence, through Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), has loaded $7.3 million into the firearm. “This exploratory work has allowed DRDC to investigate innovative technologies and other issues, such as ergonomics. Such work will allow the military to identify the most desired future weapon features,” a spokesperson in National Defence Minister Jason Kenney’s office said. The final product will be lighter than the C7 and include features that will allow for communications between the weapon and a command base. A second iteration is expected to include features to help soldiers identify military targets from civilians. Digital scopes could calculate the wind and other factors to improve accuracy. “In the medium term, this weapon concept represents a lethal, flexible general-purpose platform,” said Lt-Col Serge Lapointe of the Canadian Army said in a DRDC release. “It will be able to operate in all theatres of operations in the most complex terrain including urban areas, mountains, jungles, deserts and the Arctic.”

Nah. Looks completely unusable from the prone. Only new guys and suiciders spend more than a millisecond standing when they open up on you. Resembles that XM-29 Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW) total abortion the army was trying push a few years ago.

These are the kinds of things you end up with when noncombat civilians with way too much money design weapons.

I think most of the names from Strangelove are ‘meaningful’!

Thanks for the info on the K-31....

BTW, I think your URBAN CAMO idea would be more appropriate in a “Skittles” motif.....:0)

In keeping with Kubrick’s satirical character names, a “merkin” is a pubic hair wig. The president is bald, and his last name is “Muffley”; both are additional homages to a merkin.

Electronics warefare RF sniffing to radio locate transmissions from the weapons or radio noise from the digital components coupled to a computer aimed grenade launcher or mortar would be a handy counter for this stupor tech.

It looks like it would only be good in an urban environment and if the SHTF I plan on being as far from urban as possible.

Way back when I first saw it as a pup, I didn’t know what a mirkin was. I think I was still a little hazy on the concept of pubic hair even...

I know that no one on Free Republic ever reads the articles, but perhaps looking at a few lines of content might influence the conversation.

“It’s still a prototype, so it’s a long way from being in the field...” and “The final product will be lighter than the C7...”

Regardless of the actual merits of this design, I don't think I've ever read an article on new military technology here that didn't not contain multiple posts on why the thing won't work, or is a bad idea. I have no doubt that if it was 1903 and we were all jawing at the local hardware store instead of posting on the internet, some Freeper would make a comment about "If man were meant to fly..."

I was against the 1903 Springfield because giving a soldier 5 quickly fired rounds is extremely wasteful and will stretch logistics to the breaking point. There is only so much a mule can carry!

Repeater rifles may be of some use in European colonial wars against overwhelming hordes of spear-chucking Fuzzy Wuzzies, but in this country, we need weapons that can pick off a hostile redskin at 1,000 yards.

I have seen some clusters before but that thing is just silly. Bull Pup and looks like they used part of a camera tripod from Silk. Canada, call the IDF as they already have a Bull Pup that works very well. You can order the 25,000 you need for your military and have them in 90 days.

Silly hoser’s! A

This looks like a mock-up. I'm not certain it even works. Otherwise the ergonomics suck and it probably weighs 20 pounds with batteries, fire control computer, optics, and rifle/grenade launcher. The C7/C8 with M203 can already do what this wonder gun can do and it is in-service now. Not worth the dollars, Canada.
