Obama set to ratchet up pressure over Homeland Security funding

The Obama administration is ratcheting up pressure on Republicans to fund the Department of Homeland Security, which faces a shutdown without action by Congress after Feb. 27.

Congress appears stuck on the issue because the House is insisting that the funding bill also overturn President Obama’s executive actions on immigration that have provided legal status and work permits to millions of immigrants.

Senate Republicans do not have the 60 votes necessary to overcome a Democratic filibuster of the House bill, but have been unable to convince their House counterparts to bend. The White House believes it holds the upper hand in the battle, and will seek to press its bully pulpit advantage during a recess week for Congress.

On Tuesday, Vice President Biden travels to Baltimore to visit the Maryland State Police forensic laboratory. He’s expected to discuss how Homeland Security funding helps provide training and technical assistance for law enforcement.

The White House will hold its summit for countering violent extremism next week, with the president slated to deliver remarks both Wednesday and Thursday on counterterrorism initiatives.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and other agency officials are also expected to press the case over the coming days, with one senior official there calling the push for full funding a “huge priority for this department.”

Johnson is trying to convince Republicans to bend.

The department says Johnson has already visited with at least 20 lawmakers on Capitol Hill to discuss the funding situation, and placed more than a dozen phone calls to members.

“We’re just laying out the facts to anyone who wants to come talk to him,” said the official.

The administration and Democratic allies on Capitol Hill have already repeatedly invoked recent terror attacks in Paris and Canada to pressure Congress on the issue.

As usual, Obama, Reid and McConnell are allied against the conservatives in the House.

And they probably have a government-funded sleeper cell in the wings to "prove their point" the day after the funding gets held up....

Not saying I will like the outcome of the process, but the next move seems to be for McConnell to pass something and then the two differing bills would go to conference. Is that not the case?

Conservatives need to make this a JOBS issue. They should go on record saying they will pay the salaries of 230,000 DHS employees, even though only 200,000 (deemed essential) will come to work.

Not having 30,000 at work will make it more difficult to give out Social Security cards and work permits, which will SAVE American jobs.

And those 200,000 'Essential Employees'? Many watch porn and play Keno on their PCs all day long. Have 30,000 non-essential employees who carry their water not show up, and they'll be in a world of hurt.

It’s appropriations and has to start in the House (at least when Republicans are in control).

As far as I’m concerned there isn’t one of them worth spending any more money on.

No, it is not. Because the senate cannot introduce a funding bill. It must come from the House. And the senate can’t amend the existing House bill because the democrats will not allow the Senate to proceed to debate, so the bill can be amended.

This is all manufactured to pressure the House to send a clean bill, and thus, give up its power of the purse.

Obama’s power must not be questioned or thwarted, so the democrats are sticking with him, and McConnell is more than happy to go along, because he wants amnesty and loves to undermine conservatives in the House.

The Rep’s should be out in front of every microphone they can find and remind that it is about Obama’s usurpation of the legislative function via EO. Make it stark and make it clear.

The DHS did not exist before 9/11. Since 9/11 it has grown into a monster that consumes Freedom and Rights at the expense of the citizens. It wasn’t needed before it isn’t needed now.
Kill it and let the FBI resume the tasks that they did before 9/11.
And kill off the TSA to boot. We don’t need the TSA at all.

Why do we even need a DHS? Obola himself said the threat of terrorism is overblown. He compared it to the peskiness of fighting crime a mayor faces.

But then, considering how many terrorists are employed by DHS, he is the one to give the "go signal" should it become necessary.

You know how the media loves to lavish attention on leads that bleed.

Written by a Democrat propagandist, the article mendaciously says Congressional Republicans are preventing passage of a bill — by passing one. In reality, Congress is “stuck” because Senate Democrats refuse to allow debate or voting on ANY bill at all. They are trying to prevent Republicans from using the Conference process to get their way — a game the Democrats know quite well.

What’s the problem? The R’s don’t want to fund part of HLS, and the ‘Rats won’t help a bill pass without the funding. Bottom line would be either no bill or no funding. Either works just fine!

The only fly in the ointment would be when R’s *want* the bill more than they want to unfund part of HLS.

Have you ever wondered about invertebrates?

Just keep an eye on Boehner and McConnell and see how fast they fold with all their RINO butt sniffers along with them.
