Conservatives not sweating Homeland Security shutdown
thehill.com ^ | 2/15/15 | Christina Marcos

Hard-line House GOP conservatives aren’t worried about a looming Department of Homeland Security shutdown as the deadline for congressional action draws near.

Many of the conservative lawmakers who most want to aggressively challenge President Obama's executive actions on immigration think that if push comes to shove, a shutdown will be worth the fight.

And at this point, they don't think there will be any electoral consequences if there is a shutdown.

"I'm just not that scared of sticking to principles and filling campaign promises that we made back home, irrespective of what leadership tells us to do here," said Rep. Curt Clawson (R-Fla.).

"It's worth having this fight," said Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.).

Gone are assurances from Republican lawmakers that there won't be a shutdown later this month.

Most DHS employees are considered "essential," meaning that workers like border patrol agents and Transportation Security Administration employees would remain on the job, albeit without pay. So in the eyes of some lawmakers, a DHS shutdown wouldn't have as much impact as the government-wide shutdown in 2013.

"The shutdown would be extremely limited. It would be only in one department, with only a small percentage of people in that one department. But again, nobody has a goal here of shutting anything down. The goal here is to get the president to get right with the Constitution that he swore an oath to uphold," said Rep. John Fleming (R-La.).

Of course, many Republicans in the House and Senate think allowing DHS to shut down would be a bad idea.

It’s all Democrat now. The House did its work and the Democrats blocked debate in the Senate. They could have filed amendments and gone to conference where Boehner would have caved. But they sit and pout and count on the press to lie to the people again. I don’t give a crap. We shut down the government in 2013 and won in a landslide. NO FUNDING EVER FOR DICTATORIAL AMNESTY!! EVER!! Shut the damned thing down. We did fine without any of it.

You seriously want to shut the military etc. down?

The military? Last time I looked, the military was under the Department of Defense, not DHS. Try to keep up.

Did any of those organizations prevent the Mulsim Brotherhood from infiltrating EVERY level of our government?

NOPE.

Quite frankly, I get the feeling that our government protects terrorists.

It is under Defense. The Military only comes under DHS for the types of roles that the SOB Obama wants to use the military against us the citizens.

Sure it does. Sooner or later, our nation will pay a price for it.

They can absolutely win, but they won’t, and the reason is liberal Republicans. The democrats won’t even be in the equation, liberal Republicans will attack the conservative members with an unhinged zealotry that would impress the most dedicated liberal. It is truly a win-win situation for Obama, the republicans’ own actions will make sure they get all the blame, and he will brag that they approved his illegal actions.

Why not, they protect and even aid and abet tens of millions of illegals....

As the border patrol looks south, they got tens of millions of illegals behind them....

Why if it were not for ICE and the the Border Patrol, our country would be invaded....yuk yuk...

Try to imagine running a private business which was a total 100% failure. In private sector America your biz would about 1 hour...

Lets be realistic in shutting anything down for the government will it really be shut down. The US Government is so massive that to shut it completely down America would shut down. Social security checks continue, food stamps continue and many social programs go on and on. the military would not cease to exist either. The so called government shutdowns are a political ploy. DHS will not be shutdown as Obama has screwe the amnesty issue so much that there is money allocated for it through so many channels that one is closed another is opened. Lets face it America is screwed for more than next two years as he had 6 years to get his apppartus in place. Anyone whom thinks that Obama has not had provisional outcomes in place is naive to how the Chicago Political Machine Operates. There is so much under the table that has transpired that in its a tangled web of deceit and distortions that will take years to unwind a mess.

Last time the Government was shut down, 9 months later the GOP took the congress/Senate by landslide. Why is it a bad thing??

I just hate the name “homeland security” — it sounds so foreign, a name that Nazis/communists would think up, and all the functions that go along with it. What is wrong with “civil defense?” Citizen-engaged civil defense served our parents/grandparents/great grandparents, etc., well through several terrible wars. We don't need this homeland security nonsense and everything it stands for. I for one hate even the name of it, and the sooner it is gone the better.

DHS includes the Coast Guard.

DHS includes the Coast Guard and the Secret Service. DHS is otherwise of questionable utility, especially the TSA.

Good idea for the lawmakers to shut it down. Except the GOPe seldom stands for principle. They are more and more looking like a bunch of scared chickens as they time and again back off.
