Free Republic does indeed seem to be sliding the way of the DU or Kos from comments that I’ve seen. That’s too bad seeing Free Republic sliding downhill like that!

It’s not an analogy. That’s what it’s called in the engineering world and is an accurate technical description. But it doesn’t roll off consumer tongues like “hybrid,” so the marketers went with “hybrid.” Besides, “hybrid” fits on the little chrome badge affixed to the rear of the car.A “Regeneratively Braked Green Vehicle” badge would take up the entire width of the teeny car hatchback.

What could possibly go wrong?

Great—then put your money where your big, fat mouth is, and start your own computer company and demonstrate to us.

You really have no idea what the hell you’re talking about. If you *truly* believe regulatory effects have no impact on Apple’s choice to manufacture overseas, you are a complete idiot.

Electric Vehicle Interest ping.

It looks like Apple sees the writing on the wall when it comes to falling battery prices and $1.00 per gallon equivalent electricity. Let's hope that they and others can help us be energy independent.

If anyone else wants to be on this list, please let me know either through a reply or through FReep mail.

his hybrid currently required $9/day in fuel vs. $30-something for a straight-up gas job.

That's because he was comparing his new Prius with his beater Crown Vic.

because of taxation questions.

The only question is why we have the highest corporate rate in the world. Get rid of that and we'll talk about "repatriating".

Try to use some common sense.

Unfortunately we can’t be sure of the exact cost. However, these recent clues offer some interesting bounds and observations[3]:

Manufacturing costs for the iPhone are likely to be much higher than comparable devices. This is partly because of the design of the product and partly because of the quality testing needed.

Those costs are likely to range between $12.5 and $30 per unit.

The iPhone manufacturing costs are likely to be twice or three times the average.

Labor costs are still a small part of the overall cost structure at between 2% and 5% of sales price.

The high level (141 steps) of human interaction in the process could be automated however, the fact that it isn’t implies that the cost of automation would be higher and the flexibility of the automated process would be lower. It’s much more likely that the process is a mixture of labor and robot intensive sub-processes.

Even if we assume a $30 manufacturing cost, there is still $60 that needs to be allocated to transportation and warranty expense. These require sanity checks as well.

Another sign of the beginning of the decline.

Kodak, Polaroid, DEC... Nothing lasts forever.

You need to use some common sense. Here’s an article on the topic from Forbes:

Tesla is sucking tons of taxpayer dollars. Please don’t cite them as an example on FR.

Apple Car? Don’t think so. May be some innovative concept that will again change our world but I doubt it’s an actual car. First off it’s not flat - and I say that with no humor or sarcasm. It requires too many competencies way outside their realm, mechanical in particular.

And a few sensors on a rented minivan is far from making a car.

Some wag joked it would be a magic carpet. I’m inclined to agree.

I just want Americans to have jobs.

So, set blame on who is really causing the problem. Hint: it's not Apple. Apple is just doing what any smart business would do. The problem lies with our gubmint and their ridiculous corporate tax rates and laws. FWIW, I don't use and really don't care for Apple products.
