--SNIP-- McManus is one of 4,481 members of the New York City Teachers Retirement System and the New York State Teachers Retirement System who earned pensions over $100,000 in 2014. The number was a stark increase from the 1,663 who earned a six-figure pension in 2009, according to the Empire Center.
Teachers union officials defended their retirees, saying that the average teacher pension is a modest $44,978.

ultimately, all public pensions, from city on up, are all paid for by the federal govt.
any ‘shortfall’ incurred by the state is backed up by the federal govt.
so you see, all those liberals in blue states are funding their retirement off your labor... regardless what state you’re living in
Every time I hear the union talk about state employees being paid less than the private sector it makes me sick! How many private sector employees retire at 55 with a lifetime pension and medical care?
Exactly.
The amount of times I hear how they did it up there, well guess what, you screwed your place up so either do it this way or piss off back to the socialist crap state you left.
or the usual of we call it this , well down here we don’t, or the other is how they laugh if you have pulled pork , grits, or even have a Christmas tree burning party while drinking and bringing your own food like we do here and there is about 150 of us. I had one woman tell me it was a novel idea but why would you do that and get cold and dirty and wear camo or jeans to a party.
love your username too
Bingo we have a winner! Check out those new residents in the sunny South and Southwest in their modest $500,000 mini-mansions from NJ, NY, Ct, Ma, Il, Ca, etc.
Fortunately, she was able to keep my Dads Fed insurance after he died. So that is great. But the teachers working today have much better pensions/401ks than the old timers had.
“I just took over my moms finances. She was a teacher for 25 years in MA. Her pension is about $17k per. The only social security she gets is from working part time, about $150 a month.
Not exactly living large.”
This is true. Many of those public pensions don’t get you Social Security, so “an average” of 44K per year in NY is far from big bucks. It was the same story in Detroit. Yes, there were a few fat cats who got trimmed, but there were a lot of schlubs who were barely making it BEFORE the BK.
“Topping New Yorks pension list is Queens College history Prof. Edgar McManus, 90, who retired in 2012 after a 55-year career in education and now receives a whopping $561,286-a-year pension. I was there a long time it adds up, McManus, who lives in Manhattan, said Thursday.”
After 55 years of that, I’m not sure it’s adequate compensation. And, it’s not like he’s going to buy a Harley and bum around the US with trophy wife in the saddle car...
Good or not, they had a contract and evidently fulfilled their part of it. If you had done same, you would rightfully expect to reap the benefits promised.
Yep same here. MA,,NY, NJ, etc plates sitting in the half million driveways while telling us all how great it is up there.
true... and it points to the main issue... fixing those contracts
