Portage woman, 93, hits milestone with 1,000 workouts at Curves

PORTAGE, MI — "Move forward and never give up" is the motto 93-year-old Kay Didas lives by as she keeps herself motivated to maintain a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle.

The Portage woman recently became one of four highlighted members at Curves in Portage for reaching 1,000 workouts. For this achievement, a photo poster of her is displayed on the wall.

For Didas working out is a lifestyle, not a goal. She said what kept her coming was her love and passion for working out and the positive atmosphere that staff and other members at Curves provide.

"I work out because it's something I enjoy," Didas said. "Every last person in this building (staff and members at Curves) makes me feel loved.

"This is a place where people greet you, smile at you and genuinely care about your well-being," she added.

She has been a member of Curves since 2007, working out for a half-hour three times a week for strength training, cardio and stretching. In addition, she recently joined a body basics class on Mondays to increase her balance, flexibility as well as additional strength training.

Curves Owner and Manager Rochelle Thompson said Didas is an inspiration and plays an integral part at Curves, epitomizing the true meaning of perseverance.

There’s a 91 year old woman who works out at my gym. She’s amazing! She uses the treadmill, the bike, the machines and she does wall push-ups. She has all of her faculties, too. She’s such an inspiration to me!

I have a family member who owns a Curves (franchise). This womans experience is not out of the ordinary as “seniors” have the time to do the 3-4 workouts a week. To many it not only keeps them healthy, but becomes a social circle of sorts as well. Curves also cannot discriminate against men, so some husbands join and workout with their wives as well. All in all, it’s a pretty good full-body workout...

Just retired, and I want to be like her when I grow up!

Seen curves and the wife went there for a while.
IMO the thing is a complete joke made to make them feel like they are working out to feel better about themselves.

As if one has to pay money and join some club just to exercise. I think it’s a social thing for narcissists or something.

I'm shocked that the headline isn't this:

Portage mom, 93, hits milestone with 1,000 workouts at Curves

IMO Curves plays to the insecurity of some women by helping them believe they are working out as they tinker around the room doing this or that on devices that to me do NOTHING.

My wife found it a waste of money.

Well thanks for calling my wife and I narcissists.

I’ll be 65 in November and she’ll be 55 in October, we go at least 2 times a week for an hour and a half to two hours a visit. It would cost us over 50,000 dollars to purchase all of the equipment that’s available to us for just 500 dollars a year. When it’s freezing cold we can still workout and when we hit that long stretch of 100+ plus degree days West TX is famous for it’s about 70 degree’s in the fitness center. She tends to drift towards cardio type workouts while I stick with the weights, after one year of this we’ve shown a hell of an improvement. I’m doing 3 reps of 10 at 210 lbs on the bench press with a max press of 245 lbs. 3 reps of 10 at 420 on the leg press with a max press of 510. I work the other equipment as well plus free weights. I’m not too sure what she’s capable of but I have seen her flip a 400 lb calf and hold it down while I vaccinated and ear tagged it. I’m 5-7 175 and she’s 5-2 and 120. Not sure what your seeing but as far as social it seems far from it, most that go there are serious about their workouts and don’t have time to chat. I really enjoy it and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Only an absolute fool would believe they'd have to spend 50k, or even $1 on "equipment" in order to exercise.

If ya believe that, you'll believe anything.

Other than someone with serious health issues who needed some special apparatus to accommodate.

For a normal human, ya certainly don’t need machines costing hundreds or thousands of $$.
