"American Sniper" Chris Kyle described his killer as "nuts" in a text to a friend moments before they were both shot dead by a former Marine, a court was told.
Defence lawyers for Eddie Ray Routh claim the 27-year-old was psychotic at the time of the shooting.
But prosecutors say Mr Routh was aware of what he was doing when he gunned the pair down at a Texas gun range in 2013.
The hit film based on Kyle's memoir is nominated for six Oscars.
The former Navy Seal, who has the most recorded kills of any US sniper, was shot and killed along with his friend Chad Littlefield at a rural shooting range south-west of Fort Worth.
~snip~
"This dude is straight up nuts,'' Kyle texted to Littlefield as Mr Routh sat behind them in the vehicle.
"He's [sitting] right behind me, watch my six," Littlefield texted back, using a military reference for watching one's back.

Note to self. DO NOT take a drunk, stoned PTSD wack-job who's 'nuts" to the gun range.

My thoughts too. If he was so why obviously NUTS why do you put a gun in his hand ? That in itself is insane!

ANY activity but shooting.
Even base-jumping would be safe, in comparison.

I think it was his personal pistol.. Kyle used long rifles for long distance target shooting. It’s not clear if he was open carrying or the gun was in a backpack.

There's doubt about the PTSD defense, is looking more and more like some kind of jihadi sympathizer -
"A veterans group has claimed to have uncovered potentially significant information about the accused killer of American Sniper Chris Kyle.
The Warfighter Foundation alleged that Eddie Ray Routh, 27, the Marine veteran accused of murdering Navy SEAL Kyle two years ago, never saw combat nor experienced traumatic situations during his time serving overseas,TheBlaze reported on Thursday."
******
"When we evaluate cases for potential Muslim terrorists, we always look for physical signs like a trimmed mustache and a beard that is lesser trimmed. And when it comes to a crime that was committed, we look at who the victims are. In the story on Eddie Routh who murdered Chris Kyle, there are signs of concern, especially the facial hair, it does match the profile of a convert.
Also, Routh was a prison guard over Muslim terrorists at Bilad Airbase in Baghdad in 2007. He never served in battle, but spent most of his time looking and talking to Muslims in jail. He could have likely interacted with the inmates and got converted; prison has a higher conversion rate than any mosque. Also, why would he kill a Navy seal who was known to have killed so many terrorists?"
*****
"What the media says that Routh had Post Traumatic Disorder is simply untrue. According to The Warfighter Foundation:
Eddie Routh served one tour in Iraq in 2007, at Balad Air Base (the 2nd largest U.S. installation in Iraq), with no significant events. No combat experience. Let me say that again, he NEVER SAW COMBAT or any aspect of traumatic events associated with a combat deployment (i.e. incoming mortar or rocket fire). He never left the base, EVER.
I've been seeing that Routh punk on TV every day since the trial process has kicked off and he doesn't look anything like no "former Marine" but more like a random islamokook. Right now he's less hairy and more trimmed up than he has been, probably grudgingly done at the pleading of defense counsel.

I don’t get it either. Why didn’t they just abort the range thing and take him to Wendy’s for a burger and a Prozac? Its beyond belief that two battle hardened special ops guys would put a loaded weapon in the hands of a nut job.

Which all begs the question, why did they continue on to the gun range with this character? I would say his battlefield conditioning failed him.

That’s also the rumor I heard, but I doubt it will be brought up during the trial.

Maybe so. Its hard to get your head around though.
The gun range we used to go seemed to have a gazillion muslims on Thursdays for some reason. We jokingly referred to it as Muslim Day. We wouldn’t go near the place on Thurs. Who knows when one of them might get a wild hare and go jihad.

Someone mentioned the shooter had a connection to the Muslims. But showed nothing to support the premise. Have you seen anything that would support that comment?

He’d held his girlfriend and her roommate at sword/knife point. The guy should have been behind bars

Yes I don’t know why they let him go so soon after that. This does not appear to be about PTSD. The guy is a total schizoid.

His job while serving at the Balad Air Base was prison guard. The speculation is that he caught the religion from the prisoners he was guarding.
As a theory, it's pretty thin. But it definitely makes more sense than PTSD, given he was never in combat and that Balad, being the second largest US installation in Iraq, was pretty comfortable place.
