Want To Start A Blog in Philadelphia? You’ll Need A $300 License For That!
Libertarian Republic ^ | February 11, 2015 | by Grant Phillips

Licensing regulations reduce economic freedom by creating barriers to market entry. For example, in my current home of Philadelphia, bloggers are required to obtain a $300 permit from the city. Blogging is by no means a lucrative business. In fact, an estimated 80% of bloggers will never make more than $100 from their work. A city official ironically says Philadelphia “loves the self-employed”. These permit-happy bureaucrats fail to grasp basic economics: occupational licensing can be detrimental to the economy.

Embedded link was highlighted in preview but not in the post. It’s there but not highlighted. Or go to the original posted article.

The article is typical. In order to get hits you post a misleading headline. I have to give them credit for linking to the factual article!

So I have to search a story within an excerpted story to find all this? Who the #@*+ is gonna do that? BTW, I know of bloggers who make six and seven figures from their blogs. They’re not all sitting at the library. And what’s this library crap, anyhow? How many people in modern day America don’t have Internet access in their home? I dated some hillbilly and redneck gals back in the very early 2000’s in the wilds of Mississippi, and they all had the Internet.

If Benjamin Franklin were starting out today, he’d probably find another city.

The person at the library PC just —might— be a journalist blogging under an assumed name.

And posting stories that had been ‘spiked’ by his or her editors.

I think he is saying that building inspectors, plumbers, doctors, nurses, carpenters, etc should be licensed. I hope you don’t disagree with that.

Take a walk thru any fat, lard-ass bureaucracy and tell me how comfortable you’d be leading these purse-carrying, 50 IQ apes into an armed confrontation to collect $300 bucks.

The end of the fake Left-wing Rambo is near. All that’s left is a puny wimp who’s been castrated by an anorexic slut looking for free rubbers.

Licensing usually has other, professional, educational requirements in addition to paying the fees. Can anyone say, “professional journalist” from an accredited journalism school.

There can be. FreeNet. Look it up.

It seems you would be closed to the concept of requiring "journalists" to have qualifications other than being able to stumble into a public library.

Absolutely, I am opposed and closed to the concept.

I am a person who believes the First Amendment is an absolute right, unfettered, and without requirement, qualification, credential, or license.

Again: are you for licensing journalists? You didn't answer; you posed a new question (that I did answer).

I think he is saying that building inspectors, plumbers, doctors, nurses, carpenters, etc should be licensed. I hope you don’t disagree with that.

Milton Friedman stated that most, if not all, government licensing is against Freedom and damaging to a free society.

Milton Friedman has written at length about the "evils" of government licensing. He works are pure genius.

If you have a chance read up on his writings. In a few of his writings he specifically addresses the damage done by requiring doctors to be licensed by "the government."

He has written at length about how "the market" solves ALL the problems that government licensing is purported to solve. Hint: government licensing involves "the monopolistic power (force) of government -- source of corruption and sadistic abuse.

His writings are a joy to read because he views human action from the viewpoint of Liberty. His logic is impeccable.

If you read his works just on licensing you will gain a new appreciation of Freedom and true capitalism.

I have never read Friedman. I will try; if I cannot afford the time, I may need to allow someone to summarize it. I am ever-evolving my beliefs, but unlike the liberal ‘evolution’, I always try to evolve towards greater individual freedom.

Define journalists.

Is every schoolchild learning to write an "author"?
