AMC’s “Better Call Saul” set a new record for a cable series premiere audience Sunday night, drawing 6.9 million viewers.

That’s down from the 10.3 million who watched the finale of its parent series, “Breaking Bad,” but it’s well above the audience “Breaking Bad” had averaged for every episode before the finale.

As late as the end of its fourth season, “Breaking Bad” averaged fewer than two million viewers.

“Saul” stars Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman, the sleazy lawyer who facilitated Bryan Cranston’s Walter White in “Bad.”

“was due to the new episode of “Walking Dead””

You cant be serious. Those shows aren’t even in the same class. If anything Walking dead had the people two turned on their channel a little early.

"You cant be serious. Those shows aren’t even in the same class. If anything Walking dead had the people two turned on their channel a little early."

"Walking Dead" had 15.6 million viewers last night. "Better Call Saul" had 8.4 million viewers.

"“The Walking Dead” returned for the second half of its fifth season with a mid-season premiere that delivered 15.6 million total viewers and 10.1 million adults 18-49. “The Walking Dead” remains the #1 show in all of television among adults 18-49. Last night’s episode was the highest performing regularly-scheduled entertainment program of 2015. With time-shifted playback added in, this mid-season premiere of “The Walking Dead” should exceed more than 20 million viewers.

"AMC also expects to see significant time-shifting activity for “Better Call Saul,” as the show is opening up a new night of original programming for the network on Mondays. AMC will next release ratings information for “Better Call Saul” early next week, with the arrival of live+3 Nielsen ratings for the two-night premiere."

"AMC today announced that the premiere of “Better Call Saul” last night was the biggest series premiere in cable history, drawing 4.4 million adults 18-49 and 4.0 million adults 25-54. The second episode of “Better Call Saul” airs tonight at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, as part of a two-night television premiere event."

The new episode of "Better Call Saul" on tonight without "Walking Dead" numbers affecting it, will give a better calculation of numbers watching "Better Call Saul".

Walking Dead has been on for a while and people are familiar with the show, Better Call Saul, not so much. For that reason isn’t comparing ratings at this point a bit like comparing apples to oranges?

A lot of shows get good ratings when they premier only to die quickly afterwards

The shows are in the same class, actually. Excellent drama is excellent drama, regardless of the setting.

TWD consistently breaks ratings records, which is why AMC sandwiched “Better Call Saul” between it and TWD’s discussion show, “Talking Dead.” They knew what to do to make sure “Better Call Saul” was seen by the largest audience possible.

It was Desert Rino who brought up the number question. I was answering his post, using the actual numbers.

The question was did Walking Dead showing just before the new program, Better Call Saul, affect the number watching Better Call Saul. Tonight, Better Call Saul will not be next to Walking Dead so I think the number wanting to watch it will be a truer number than last night.

Thanks for the ping, CedarDave. I’ll give this show a try. I saw most of the first episode and it looks kooky enough to work. LOL.

Dark, dark humor in episode 2 when Saul saves the two skateboarders from being killed in the desert (likely ABQ's west mesa). I liked Raymond Cruz (Detective Sanchez in "The Closer: and "Major Crimes" series).

Did you see Sunday night’s TWD episode? The group is on its way through central Virginia, which is my territory. It’s prime Daryl-snatching time.

As I said on an earlier thread, I was puzzled by Saul's watching his old cheesy commericals on a VHS tape. Even in 2006, who was watching VHS?

I wonder why Gilligan used that approach?

Like Heaven, actually.

They are the best cinnamon rolls you can get in most places, unless you know some local artisan that understands that it isn’t about the massive size, but its about the butter, sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

Cinnabons are both.

The one at our mall folded. I’m on a diet, and if I were in a position to have a Cinnabon, I’d do it, just because I know it would be a rare treat.

Here in Texas, Cinna-bons can be found in Pilot truck stops.

Yes, I saw the episode. I’m counting on you grabbing Daryl as this may be the only chance you get. :o)

I think a VHS tape was used in that scene in order to make it easier for the audience to quickly identify the media as a one-off custom recording and not a mass market DVD release. It fits the story’s time frame better also.

I think the first half of your comment may have nailed the reason. I got to disagree with the second half though. It is understood that the story starts in 2006, and by then VHS had pretty much been left by the wayside.

There also may be a yet to disclosed backstory reason that Gillgan used that effect. With BB/BCS, you just never know. In the vein of tarantula in the jar, or pink teddy bear eye in the pool kind of stuff.

Far more people have watched "Breaking Bad" on Netflix than watched it on cable television. So the 10.3 million cable viewers does not surprise me.

I'm looking forward to seeing the show but as I cut my cable, I'm waiting for it to show up on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime.
