Carl E. Heastie, the first African-American to serve as speaker of the New York Assembly, vowed on Saturday to use his powerful new position to call attention to the needs of black New Yorkers.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for our community,” Mr. Heastie said at a rally hosted by the Rev. Al Sharpton in Harlem. As speaker, Mr. Heastie, a Bronx Democrat, will join the governor and the State Senate majority leader as Albany’s “three men in a room” who negotiate the state budget and other important matters.
“All of you are going to be sitting at that table with me for the first time in history,” Mr. Heastie said at the headquarters of Mr. Sharpton’s National Action Network. He cited reforming the criminal justice system as one of his goals.
Mr. Heastie, 47, was elected speaker on Tuesday, replacing Sheldon Silver, a Manhattan Democrat who held the position for 21 years but was forced to step down after his arrest last month on federal corruption charges. On Saturday, Mr. Heastie also named a search committee to look for an executive director to lead a new Assembly ethics office that he is establishing, one of several reforms he has promised to pursue in the wake of Mr. Silver’s downfall.
Mr. Heastie is not the first African-American to lead a majority caucus in the Legislature, but white men have held Albany’s most powerful posts in recent years.
In a speech that lasted barely three minutes — Mr. Heastie is known to be a man of few words — he said he would not be discouraged by the scrutiny of his background that played out in the news media as he pursued the speakership. Mr. Heastie has faced questions about his campaign spending and his travel expenses.

In New York only black lives count now?
This double standard will continue to flourish long as the lefties are in control of our government and it’s bureaucracies, the media, hollywood and public education.
But there will be a cultural correction some day, but not today or tomorrow, maybe not for 10, 20 or 50 years. I suspect it will come as this nation falls from internal rot, the same as any other great nation of history. The lefties will see to it.
Ha! Just watch the number of white Democrats...especially in upstate NY, switch to Republican.
The honkies, Asians and Hispanics are on their own.
Obviously they’re not looking for a “color-blind” society, but for never ending preferential treatment.
They can pound sand.
It’s precisely decades and decades of big gubmint “help” to Blacks that has caused the immense damage to them and their family unit that we see today.
