Dead wrong, it travels at the speed of sound. about 1050 fps. Ask any grunt. And yes, that is exactly how you can estimate distance. Flash to bang. Military does it a the time.

You are confusing velocity of the fragments etc. The compression wave is not supersonic, it travels neatly at the speed of sound. About 5 seconds per mile. Pistol report, up to atomic bomb, all the same.
