Doctors and Guns

I ran across this article last month and thought about commenting on it, but never got around to it. It starts out with a 61-year-old going to the doctor and being surprised by a question about guns.

Hands of medical doctor with a stethoscope. Isolated on white. The article quotes Dr. David Nash, dean of Thomas Jefferson University’s School of Population Health in Philadelphia, as a proponent of the idea that “80 percent of a population’s well-being is determined by social factors such as where they live, who their family is, their socioeconomic status and the quality of their relationships.”

“We’re beginning to recognize that your ecosystem, if you will, is predictive of your medical health,” Nash said. “If you have a gun at home, you’re more at risk of gun-related violence.”

The article goes on to try to make the case for the gun questions by suggesting they are just one of many kinds of questions that doctors “frequently” ask to get a better idea of a patient’s whole health picture.

I never tell them of all the guns I found at the bottom of that pond... :^)

Why don’t you ask me directly what you want to know? That I will answer: I am not hiding any Jews in my attic.

I have a conversation with an urban pediatrician—he is happy about all the incentives that Obama has given his physician group and they are so thrilled they are building a new facility. I asked him what will happen to that money in the future? No idea. He wanted to discuss benefit plans—why?—to reduce his taxes.

I frequently get information from another pediatrician about the wonderfulness of Obama, leftist policies like min wage increases, other craziness. The pediatricians seem to be the worst when it comes to leftist idiocy. Even more galling is that both these physicians are immigrants from an impoverished third-world socialist country. To them, it is the government being generous and helping people. They see no connection between this kind of idiocy and the poverty that dominates much of the world.

This “doctor” claims 80 percent of wellness is due to environmental conditions. He doesn’t mention genetics, which is a major determinant. He is not a serious scientific professional, just an activist.

“...environ’mental’ issues..”? I know that glow-bull warming or even talk of it gets my heart rate up a notch or two. LOL!

I told the nurse that I had been a trial lawyer for over 35 years and what did she think.

Wish you practiced 1,000 miles north.

Since my doctor and I both shoot frequently....I'm guessing he already knows.

Ha! Me too. My doc (one of them...sigh) has invited me to his range to put some lead down range with his AR-15. I am very tempted to take him up on it.

There’s an easy way to get to that umber that makes it totally unreliable. Most individuals who are in the violent crime business, like drug dealers, probably do illegally own and use one or more guns, like the Chicago gang bangers. In the course of their “business” many are going to be shot and killed, but not with the guns they keep. Nevertheles, they go into the number of people who were killed who had guns in their homes.

My wife was asked by her doctor if there was gun in the house and she answered quite honestly that no there was not a gun in the house. Well not since that horrible accident in the desert when all the guns fell into an unmarked abandoned mine shaft.

Remember that in the last month, all information within personal medical files (remember doctor-patient privilege in the good old days?), will now be accessible to no fewer than 35 federal government agencies, whenever they want, and for whatever purpose they want.

This article contains a list of those agencies. Including the “HHS Office for Civil Rights”, the Department of Defense, NASA, the Department of Justice and Bureau of Prisons, the Departments of Agriculture, Education, and Labor. Now can look at your personal medical records whenever they want to.

pediatricians are at the part of medicine that is seeing big cuts because most kids are healthy and only the intensive care pediatricians or sub specialists do billable procedures. They are jealous that they went to med school but because they don’t stick needles in kids, manage vents or cross clamp kiddie’s aortas...they don’t make the cash. Perfect recipe for liberals... ENVY.

Whether or not I have a firearm at my home has absolutely NOTHING to do with why I’m seeing a doctor. Unless I was an idiot and shot myself in the foot or something, otherwise they shouldn’t be asking questions regarding such things.

That’s like hiring a plumber and the plumber asking if you assemble model airplanes. It has NOTHING to do with what you’re hiring them for. They are trying to run a fine line, squeezing firearms ownership into some bastardized version of ‘injury prevention’?

Of course, as the state grows in its control over healthcare, every aspect of our lives are going to come under examination. Firearms ownership and what we eat is the ‘low hanging fruit’. Eventually they will involve themselves in our recreational activities and all sorts of things. If there’s a POSSIBLE health risk, the government will look to regulate it in some way or another.

This shit needs to be torn down and destroyed before it REALLY gets momentum. It has already started, but it may not be too late to turn it back. If it gets too far, it will take on a life of its own as all .gov programs have....

“Uh, NEVER tell a doc about anything not directly related to the condition you’re seeing him/her about. EVER.”

I agree, I agree, I agree.

None of my doctors has ever asked me that question. But if one of them did, I would tell them the question is irrelevant because I’m not seeing them for a gun-related injury or disease.

“Uh, NEVER tell a doc about anything not directly related to the condition you’re seeing him/her about. EVER. “

The other more subtle and insidious questions are related to your current emotional state. Like “are you happy or sad today.” Some of my doctors have their front office folks give you the same questionnaire every time you show up. I just tell them that what they have on-file is good enough and refuse to answer any of their thinly veiled questions about my mental state. The next thing you know the LEO’s show up at your door and demand that you to turn in your guns. It’s awful not to be able to trust your doctors, but that’s where we are today They have become organs of the state. Kinda’ like bus drivers with a medical degree.

We in the Tucson area were warned about this a few years ago at a Tea Party event by a doctor who said this was a question that was aimed at eventual confiscation through Obamacare.

How about this for subtle?

A simple line through it and a big N/A should work. Which will of course be deemed as aggressive and threatening. :>}
