The families of a victim and his killer displayed grief, forgiveness and redemption Thursday as a Spokane judge sent 17-year-old Kenan Adams-Kinard to prison for 20 years in the beating death of World War II veteran Delbert “Shorty” Belton.
The 2013 murder garnered national media attention as much for Belton’s status as a war veteran as for the racial overtones: The two teens suspected of attacking and robbing him as he sat in his parked car outside the Eagles Lodge in north Spokane are black; Belton, who later died from the beating, is white. Demetruis Glenn, the other teen accused in Belton’s death, is scheduled to stand trial in March.

Two robbery charges against Adams-Kinard were dropped in exchange for his plea. He was also ordered to pay about $6,400 in fines and restitution.
He will serve his time in a juvenile facility until he is 21.
Because Adams-Kinard is a minor being tried as an adult, a state law mandating a 20-year minimum sentence for first-degree murder does not apply to him, which means he will also be eligible for early release due to good behavior.

Indeed. I heard the killer was an aspiring rapper who fell into the wrong crowd and was planning on going to college and was turning his car around.
If he serves 2/3rds of his sentence, he'll only be 31 when he gets out or prison. Angry, institutionalized and unemployable. I'm sure we'll hear from Mr. Adams-Kinard again.
I heard that he turned his life around and will be accepted into Harvard Medical School upon his early release from prison.

He should have gotten at least 50 years if not life without parole. He will be back on the streets in 5 years doing the same thing only with new found skills he learned in prison.
This aspiring rapper who was just turning his life around should be hanged.
This is exactly why everyone should be packing. Especially the elderly.
I’ve said it before, and I’m sure I’ll say it again: Why does a murder conviction not automatically come with the death penalty or life without parole. I can’t understand how you can take a life and then someday get out of prison. Doesn’t make sense to me.

The lenient sentence is also why assailants such as this must be shot -- and killed -- during the attack, if possible.
That's not just sarcasm anymore. I heard something much the same thing on a courtroom show a couple of years ago.
A thug teen had just been sentenced to many years in prison for killing an old man. The thug's mom was yelling that it was all so unfair. Her son was young, and the old man was, well, old. And she was yelling it to the victim's family.
I'd say it was animalistic behavior, but that would be insulting animals.
One of the worst consequences of releasing Mr. A-K in his thirties is that along with immediately returning to a life of crime, he will undoubtedly impregnate a number of women leaving the world with some more useless, low IQ, oxygen thieves who will begin their own criminal lives when they become of age.
The behavior you discuss reflects the value placed by society upon the victim. The Old white man has become worthless. People wanted equality and they are in the process of replacing their masters. Frankly, I would rather have Rockefeller running things opposed to Unga Bunga, he of low intelligence and poor impulse control.
Don’t worry, the young lad will discover Islam in prison, change his name to Mohammad Jihad and start his own mosque.
