Southern California Edison IT workers 'beyond furious' over H-1B replacements

Information technology workers at Southern California Edison (SCE) are being laid off and replaced by workers from India. Some employees are training their H-1B visa holding replacements, and many have already lost their jobs.
.
.
The H-1B program "was supposed to be for projects and jobs that American workers could not fill," this worker said. "But we're doing our job. It's not like they are bringing in these guys for new positions that nobody can fill.

"Not one of these jobs being filled by India was a job that an Edison employee wasn't already performing," he said.
.
.
SCE employees said that since August, when the layoffs began, the composition of the IT workplace began to change. "I see a lot of Indian people walking the halls, and less Americans," said a third IT worker interviewed.

I’ve “accidentally” run my cart into the back of people doing that before followed by a quick “oh, excuse me, didn’t see you”. Makes grocery shopping much more fun.

The culprit is not the lowly paid India worker on H-1B visa. It is our own BIG Gov’t

yep, that and the Federal Reserve, etc. The India worker has been invited here, in a little more controlled way than an open border like we have down south. We need to withdraw the invitation in a controlled manner.

Thread is getting old, but my first question is how is this even legal? We’re told that a company must post jobs and try to find a qualified American before H1Bs can be considered.

Now we have Americans training their replacements before being let go? And a public utility at that, a regulated industry that has a monopoly to some degree.

How is this legal?

As one who has written computer programs since 1961, I admire your post. When I started in my company, we used slide rules. Even electronic calculators were not around. But I had taken a computer programming course in college, so in my engineering department I immediately saw application of computers in our work. I went on to computerize the heck out of engineering design procedures. Result was we could design, build and deliver machines a few months before our competitors could.

The computer was just a tool, like you said. It mattered little that I was using Fortran. What mattered was how efficient were my computer programs in logic, theory and assumptions.

After I had computerized everything possible in engineering, I took on the job of computerizing our manufacturing. We bought a whole bunch of numerically controlled lathes, mills, flame cutting machines. Our problem was we build machines to customer specs, so each machine was different. Therefore we had to develop highly intelligent computer programs. For example, to machine a drive shaft with many steps and contours from a rough forging, our software only needed the rough forging dimensions and the finished shaft dimension. The computer program selected all tools needed to do the job, computed the several thousand tool motions needed to transform the rough forging into finished product.

The productivity went up by orders of magnitude over manual machining! And the entire thing was developed in the crude programming language of Fortran. Like you said, computer and the language are just tools. It is what you do with it. I have a better paint brush than Michelangelo. But he did a lot better with his tool than I can do with my fancy brush.

Disclaimer: I did not come on a H-1B visa. I came on a student visa, paid my own way through engineering college (thanks to my father) and I was born in India. I rose to the title of corporate manager of CAD/CAM in an outfit employing well over a thousand people. We manufactured custom designed machines used by mass producers in Automotive and Appliance industries. And I have voted straight republican since Nixon in 1972.

I have a friend who was bought out from his IT position with a major Aerospace company, then hired by a consultant at three times the pay to do the same job for the same manufacturer. He makes $110 per hr. I cannot understand how that is possible in today’s climate.

The replacement works for a firm in India, the power company has a contract for services, not specific job role or contractor - in addition to H1B types walking around. This is where whole admin, development, or support teams are let go in the USA and the function replaced by overseas contracted staff.

Job can be terminated at a moments notice without a dime in severance pay. No fringe benefits in that $110 per hour wage. No healthcare, no sick leave, no vacation, no retirement contributions. And no money paid to state gov’t for unemployment insurance tax.

But three times seems high. I have hired a lot of job shoppers as we called them, and usually paid twice the hourly rate of our own employees.

Well, you see my friend; this is by design.
What, you might ask, is the purpose of such a design?

That, my friend, is simple:
The American Caste System

Thank you kindly. Not bad for an Indian immigrant who arrived at age 20, worked on a master’s degree in US, and then was lucky to have found the most challenging and rewarding jobs I could ever dream of, in these United States.

As long as the Senate is a 17th Amendment Senate instead of the original Constitutional Senate everyone there is either bought and paid for or actively kept from getting anything done by those with bigger fish to fry than worrying about "We the People" of the United States.

"Conservatives" let the democrat Nazi party run the Congress for most of the past eighty years and this is what you get; a Nazi nobility. A Nobility who sees most of the population as Untermenschen worthy of living only as long as they're useful and willing to migrate to any place that needs cheap, menial, labor at the moment.

Tell the people losing their jobs to move to flyover country where they can scrape by a few more years and STFU instead of pretending anyone is going to lift a finger to stop it, because they're not.

Yeah I know he has no bennies. Maybe three times is too much. My point was how he could make that much for fairly basic IT work when everyone else is cutting costs. Not trying to out him down but its not like he’s a genius programmer or anything.

No, not bad at all. I salute you, and your achievements.

We need to restore the Republic so it can once again provide the means to achieve the American dream, to have opportunity. Unfortunately it seems that only short term solutions are played out, such as labor cost cutting, and that will work until the middle class is gone. Then America will be gone too.
