West Coast port employers: Lockout could be just 5 days away

LOS ANGELES — Employers could lock out West Coast dockworkers in as few as five days if the two sides do not reach a new contract.

That warning came Wednesday from the head of a maritime association who is negotiating a new deal with a union representing longshoremen at 29 ports that handle about $1 trillion in trade annually.

Pacific Maritime Association CEO James McKenna said he wanted to avoid a coast-wide port shutdown, but employers wouldn't keep paying workers who aren't moving cargo at their normal rate if the ports become much more gridlocked. He said that could come between five and 10 days from now.

Great....I wonder how this will affect our already suffering economy.

I know the company I work for is hurting because we can't get imports in a timely manner, and are waiting for stuff to come in and be offloaded from vessels. So frustrating.

Yep - Same here, Lucky - a lockout would be really bad news for us. Importing has slowed to a crawl, stuff gets into port and sits in gridlock for weeks...

Why, in 2015,are unions (remnants of the Communist movement of the 1920s) still legal?

They are going to strike themselves into oblivion....the Panama Canal expansion is almost complete, and there is a possibility of a canal in Nicaragua, meaning it will be cheaper and faster to bypass the West Coast and move cargo through the gulf region instead.

Idiots.

Yeah, not to mention the greedy, lazy ba$tards from the USW striking the oil refineries. Combined, they will really “help” the economy!

Well, according to somebody..........the economy couldn’t be any better. I’m sure a strike on the WC wouldn’t have any effect on such a rip roaring economy. Hope the strikers enjoy their strike pay. Probably as much as they normally make. NOT! Maybe more work for the Gulf and East Coast ports via the Panama canal.

I’ve got a supplier that is bringing stuff into Savannah & trucking to their location in MO.

I’m hanging on now, if I can’t get this stuff in a reliable, timely manner..........

The Chinese New Year adds 2-3 weeks to my turnaround in Feb already. This is such a pile of crap. If my base living expenses were lower I’d consider the Democrat constituent method of making a living off.......you the taxpayer.

I'm not in a Worker's Union..and never have been.

That said...there is a place for them...and I don't think they were "Communist" at all...in the beginning...

I'd think....you might want to look at history..a bit closer.

Except my company not only has a division in China, but we manufacture parts that require some pieces from China, so we can’t produce the stuff we do, without those parts, etc.

Sucks...but that’s how it goes, when China produces certain products for a lesser cost than we can in USA, thanx to regulations and crap.

Timing it leading into CNY is curious, it’s almost as if they’re timing it for a slow period.
