Scott Walker's UW mission rewrite could end the Wisconsin Idea

Gov. Scott Walker's proposed budget calls for essentially removing the public service language from the University of Wisconsin System's mission to focus more on workforce development, according to language released Wednesday morning.

The Wisconsin Idea has long been the core philosophy of the UW System, driving campuses to extend their reach into communities and "every family in the state."

That mission also is linked to Wisconsin public radio and TV. The Walker budget cuts $5 million in state funding from the public service media. State funding makes up about 10% of the budget for their programming operations, according to a spokesman for the governor.

"I'm nearly speechless," said Mark Schwartz, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee distinguished professor of geography and chairman of the faculty University Committee. "The budget cuts are one thing. This aims at the heart of the Wisconsin Idea, and smashes it."

This sound like a good idea - stop funding liberal outreach into all the communities and families of Wisconsin.

I think Walker knows to beat back liberals we need to beat them where they eat and breed. They took over unions and schools a long time ago as part of the communist plan to take over America.

We can fight all day long about policy, but if we are turning out stupid people brain washed with communist beliefs we will never win. This is why Walker will make a great President. He knows the right battles and he has proven he can fight and win those battles.

Fixing America isn’t an overnight one time thing. We need to take back the institutions that liberals have seized. Stop them from breeding their thoughts and indoctrinating our young into their belief system.

I’d prefer that Walker simply abolish the tenure system.

Tenure was originally intended to promote free exchange of ideas and ensure intellectual freedom.

Tenure has become so badly abused it now does the exact opposite.

More than a good idea. It’s a huge step in defunding social/progressive cancer. If that jography prof thinks the nanny state is so much fun let him take a pay cut to help fund it. snivel snivel snivel.

[Walker] Budget would end Wisconsin DNR land purchases until 2028 "Republican Gov. Scott Walker's budget would prohibit the state Department of Natural Resources from purchasing any land through its stewardship program until at least 2028 — if the program still exists then.

The budget the governor released Tuesday would place a moratorium on stewardship land acquisitions. It would last until the DNR's debt service on purchases that already have been made drops to $1 for every $8 spent since the program's inception in 1989. The program won't reach that ratio until 2028. The moratorium is expected to save the state $13 million in debt by then, according to Walker's budget.

The stewardship program is set to expire in mid-2020. Legislators could vote to renew it, but the program still couldn't buy any land until it meets that debt ratio.

The stewardship program authorizes the DNR to borrow money for land purchases, boat landing repair, developing DNR property and grants to conservancy organizations and local governments for land acquisition. The Legislative Fiscal Bureau has estimated the DNR has spent $84.7 million on stewardship land purchases from mid-2000 to mid-2014. The state spent $87 million paying off stewardship program debt in fiscal year 2013-14 alone, with $73.5 million of that coming from tax dollars, according to the fiscal bureau.........."

He ought to scrap taxpayer supported tenure while he is at it.

I think this will resonate well with everyone except the extreme left. They, of course, will be furious.

But why does he want to stop research at the universities? One would think that would be an important part of their mission, especially in agriculture given Wisconsin's rural population.

Part of the University of Wisconsin's "core philosophy" was to turn out government workers?

Developing “the Workforce” is creepy, commie/globalist lingo. Wisconsinites don’t exist for the purposes of large corporate interests.

This may be better than communist indoctrination posing as liberal arts education, but it’s almost as bad.

Just get the government out of schooling at all levels.

Maybe... but if he thinks we will go along with granting citizenship to 20 million illegals, then no thanks.

Just an FYI, Walker’s budget proposes to eliminate taxpayer funding for Wisconsin Public Radio (i.e., NPR) and Wisconsin Public Television.

that is what I have been advocating for more than ten years now.

All public radio with the exception of some western stations is owned by the states. If governors chose to operate like Obama, the leftist programming would be curtailed......... tomorrow

go scott!!

LOL. So you get some prissy, pompous Liberal professor very publicly getting the vapors about how Walker is going to smash Communist education and force the university system to produce viable workers. He’s so over the top that he has to be a Walker plant.

Democrats need universities to spread their message?

No wonder they’re saddened - deeply saddened another propaganda arm gets the budget axe.
