Well, that’s too bad, but they have changed over the years and they are not the electronics/hobbyist store that they once were. Perhaps there was no market in that any longer.

They’ve been around for 94 years? Did they even have radios 94 years ago? Just kidding.

Sad to see an icon go away, but it’s been coming for years. I’m amazed they’ve lasted as long as they have, to be honest.

well circuit city (rhymes with city anyway) became hhgregg.

1/2 of crap shack’s stores will become sprints and the other half will probably add cheap jewelry, press-on nails and check cashing to go totally black.

maybe if sears or penneys implode when best buy does we’ll get some amalgam from all of that - buy sears for a penney, jc sears buy, J S B Emporium Magorium, ....

I love their 150 in 1 electronics kit. I remember all those when I was a kid. It is a shame they are just a mere shell of what they used to be.

Back in the late 1970s, when personal computers were just getting started, it was envisioned that men would use them while sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, while the wife stared adoringly from behind the kitchen counter, polishing cutlery or whatnot.

It didn't quite work out that way in my house.

Anyway, top ad is Radio Shack's TRS-80 and bottom ad is the Apple II.

Sad. Many years ago my Grandfather gave me a Radio Shack Shortwave Radio Kit for Christmas, and it led to a love of shortwave radio for me. So Radio Shack brings back those memories for me. Also now remembering the look on my mother’s face when she walked into the kitchen to find that shortwave radio kit attached with wire that was wrapped all around the kitchen sink faucet for an antenna lol. Ah, memories.

Radio Shack?

All I think of “Can I please have your phone number?” Paying cash, no matter. The clerk just says it louder: “CAN I PLEASE HAVE YOUR PHONE NUMBER?”

A bit sad to see them go. I worked at a Radio Shack in grad school. Having an Extra class ham license and First Class Radiotelephone license made it easy to build a very large body of regular customers. It was a job I could work around my grad school classes. I left Radio Shack and moved to Marine Electric Company in San Diego. I earned 3x the hourly wage and had plenty of fun plying my technical skills in the field. In time, I moved to PacBell. Another 3x on pay and more technical work. Finally, I moved to my current employer. Many of my contracts required EE/CS tasks...and Radio Shack was still there to provide the odd parts on field trips. Digi-Key, Mouser and Spark Fun get more attention now. AdaFruit as well. There are fallbacks, but they are all online order and wait for the package.

I’d echo a lot of the comments. Annoying to always be asked for my phone number. Clerks don’t know squat about anything in the store, but especially any of the electronics. Poor stocking policies.

I was in there last week for a PC board and ended up buying an etching kit (my first attempt at a home etched board). Clerks didn’t have a clue if I had everything I need (I did). They didn’t even know what it was I was buying.

They also have short hours (open late, close early) in my neighborhood. I tend to shop early in the morning if I’m buying ahead of time, and generally need something later than 6pm if I’m working on something and need something now.

I was, however, pleasantly surprised to find they were carrying Arduinos and some pretty neat accessories. I’ve been wanting to get into those and it’d be nice to have a nearby source (assuming they actually stay open). But I’ll do all my research beforehand since I’d get a better answer asking the wall than asking one of their store clerks about them.
