Here is another mark against sugary drinks: A new study has found that drinking them is associated with lowered age of menarche.
Age of first menses has decreased substantially since the early 20th century, and studies have shown that younger age of menarche is associated with increased risk of breast and endometrial cancer in later life.

After controlling for birth weight, maternal age at menarche, physical activity, and many dietary and behavioral factors, [researchers] found that girls who drank one-and-a-half 12-ounce cans a day of nondiet soda or sugared iced tea had their first period an average of 2.7 months earlier than those who drank less than two cans a week.

That is statistical noise.
Correlation is not causation. It’s entirely possible that it’s some other lifestyle component that causes the early menarche, and drinking more soda is a symptom of that lifestyle.

You are so right. I am willing to bet it has something to do with the hormones fed to the cows and chickens in our meat supply.
Better nutrition, more vitamins, and hormones in meat - not Big Gulps.

Is this study as stupid as it looks? There is no way that if you get your period in July rather than April, you are going to get cancer.
And the risk is probably a body fat %age. I believe there is some kind of set point for puberty in body fat, size, etc. Undernourished children get their periods / begin puberty later.
This is another stupid thing - yes, avoid sodas, but let’s not take girls at this sensitive age and start cutting their food because “oh no CANCER.”
If this study is correct, they should also be able to predict when we should normally start our menses. If that’s possible, they should use it to warn everyone who comes in contact with that young, hormonally charged, emotional wrecking ball that is your darling little girl, that they only have a certain time frame to get the hell out of the way of her.
The current best advice is that sugars in the diet should be *limited*, artificial sweeteners rejected entirely.
And that boys, who tend to crave meat and high density carbohydrates, should get extra vegetables and whole fruits, not just juice. And that girls, who tend to crave vegetables and fruits, should be given extra portions of meat and high density carbohydrates.
Here’s the rational.
1) Sugars and simple carbohydrates tend to promote growth of yeast, an excess of which, called Candidiasis, can create myriad health problems, some obvious and others not. It also promotes fat gain. The best way of keeping yeast under control is to limit sugars and simple carbs.
2) Artificial sweeteners are just plain bad for your intestinal flora. The worst of these is Sucralose (Splenda), that with continued use damages the flora so much that it can take months to recover in its absence. However, Sucralose does *not* inhibit some of the bad bacteria, like the genus Enterobacter, which is strongly associated with weight gain.
3) The dietary changes for boys and girls are simply so that they have more balanced diets, beyond just cravings.
LOL, excellent. I would love to see it put that way to the people who did this "study"...the poleaxed expressions would be priceless.

Bingo. Had a former boss whose daughter got her period at age 8. A highly respected research hospital nailed hormones in meat as the cause.
The really bad part comes when the researchers try and differentiate sugar in soda from sugar in fruit juice. Their results claim that sugar sweetened soda causes early menstruation, while sugar sweetened fruit juice does not. What a bunch of crap. Your tax dollars at work.
