FCC says broadband-class connections must offer at least 25Mbps download speeds
Apple Insider ^ | 01/29/15 | AppleInsider Staff

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Thursday took a step toward improving Internet speeds in America, requiring providers to offer download speeds of at least 25 megabits per second to classify as "broadband."

The new restrictions also require 3Mbps speeds for uploads to classify as broadband Internet. Internet service providers face the more severe restrictions after the FCC determined that U.S. broadband deployment is not keeping pace with the rest of the world.

The new benchmark speeds are a large improvement from the previous requirement of 4Mbps download and 1Mbps upload to classify as broadband. The FCC said that the new speeds reflect both consumer demand and advances in technology.

The FCC's 2015 Broadband Progress Report found that 55 million Americans, or 17 percent of the population, lacks access to advanced broadband. Things are even worse in rural America, where more than half the population — 53 percent — doesn't have access to the newly set standard.

Finally, the FCC found that 35 percent of schools lack access to fiber optic Internet, which prevents access to the FCC benchmark of 100Mbps per 1,000 users. The FCC has a longer-term educational goal of 1Gbps per 1,000 users.

I’m paying $45 for 100 down 10 up. Nobody forced it on me, but I do still have my Hayes 1200 on the shelf in the den (as well as a copy of Windows 1.0 on diskette) to remind me of what American ingenuity and free enterprise are capable of creating.

These asshats are channeling Venezuela.

It is possible to speed up DSL connections to 25 mbps download speeds--using a technology called G.fast. I wouldn't be surprised within the next 10 years all the DSL providers will offer G.fast connections to get you up to 50 mbps.

.63 mbps download speed
.30 mbps upload speed

That’s what ATT says is high speed internet where I’m at. I call it closer to dial-up.

"25 Mbps should be the baseline upload speed in this day and age. It may as well be the year 1996."

My downloads are at 4kb/s

What year or century am I living in?

I dunno. I haven't had dialup since 2008. Unfortunately for those who do, these new standards won't spur innovation or growth. I went from dialup to cable internet by moving.

You may think you only want and need 6, but you’ll take 25 if you know what is good for you. Government knows best.

I can remember 9200 baud in the late 80s; I just wish I had had this kind of speed back in 1996, instead of 14.4 Kbps. Heh.

Cox Cable recently ‘doubled’ their speed. They advertise 50 Mbps for my level, but I get about 40 on my wireless laptop and 35 on my wired desktop.

I haven’t noticed any real difference from their previous 20 Mbps rate, except that Netflix videos load with only about a 3 second buffer. [My new ROKU 3 box helped video loading, too.]

They do so much maintenance on the internet service that it frequently disconnects and has inconsistent latency. Their email servers have been acting up since before Christmas.

They also are raising the rate again at the next billing. After all, they did increase the Mbps.

As a former Fortune 500 lead Sysadmin/network manager, I can confidently state I need only 6.

I had 300 baud in 1980, and was happy to have it.

No, your government says you need 25. You need to listen to your betters on this. If you persist in thinking you know more than them, this won’t end well.
