Boys often don’t get a second chance to show they have self control. They are quickly disposed of like a malfunctioning robot. Not always, but in this case, I think they were hasty in expelling him unless the child has past incidents of doing the same thing to other kids.
Listen to Mom and you know about the boy. He doesn’t just pick up “snitches get stitches” in geography class. Mama, you’re not raising a “good boy”, you’re raising a banger, and in your heart you know it.
And the girl? Absent 9 days because of it? I can understand that if the boy was still there, but he’d been expelled.

He’s in big trouble and the boys he texted it to are getting in school suspension
