Thank you! All I keep thinking about in this discussion is how Bush shepherded the Saudi royal family members (and I believe one of Bin Lauden’s relatives) out of our country while my fellow NYers were burning to death. No head scarves!
I have mixed feelings on this one. Let's look at this another way. Let's say you invited me over to your home, and you had a rule that no one could smoke inside your house. If I lit up a cigarette anyway because smoking is legal and I am free to do as I wish, am I making a stand for freedom, or am I just being rude by ignoring the rules and customs expected in my host's home?
I would strongly object to anyone expecting Michelle Obama or any other American woman to wear a headscarf when the King of Saudi Arabia visits the White House, or even if they were to hold a meeting in a non-Muslim country somewhere. But she was in their country as a guest. If she didn't like the expectation to wear a head scarf, she could have chosen to stay on the plane or just stay home in DC.
We are not talking about a requirement imposed on her, but about showing respect for your host country, an important aspect of international diplomacy. Her actions show a lack of maturity and a lack of understanding of understanding of her role as a representative of the USA at these types of diplomatic functions.
What is that thing she’s wearing? Get a pretty mantilla.
Different. The Catholic Church - not matter what you think - was one of the strongest foundations of Western culture. Not a filthy tribal bunch of throat-cutting thieves.
“Pelosi wore the scarf during a visit to the tomb of John the Baptist inside the Umayyad mosque in Damascus and not in her meeting with with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.”
I thought only women had to wear a scarf on their heads. Weird.

It appears to be beyond many here that they can (rightly) hate the Obamas without defending the ever-so-precious House of Fraud.
This same thing happens on Putin threads - people crawling out of the woodwork to defend a dictator.
Oh, those Putin threads make my head hurt! Awful.
It looks like a large table cloth to me. Embarrassing.
one of the few times I am proud of what the first lady has done while her husband has been in office now if she could stop he husband from bowing before Saudi royalty.
The cellulite is great in this one.....
I’m wondering if - like good restaurants in NYC that hand out ties and jackets - the pope keeps a few black scarves in a drawer at the door of the Vatican. That one needed to be laundered and pressed!
I think the one on the right is my housekeeper....
I’m actually okay with a woman who has to visit a mosque wearing a covering on her head. If I were visiting the Vatican I would wear a scarf or a mantilla. (I have one in my sock drawer.) But certainly I would not wear one for an entire country.
LAMO, if one of them should wear a head scarf it’s her husband. I’m still not convinced that it’s just not anti-wookie sentiment.
I think the Mrs. Roper mu-mu was unsexy enough that the veil wasn’t necessary.
Why do all women keep a mantilla in the sock drawer? A mystery yet to be solved...
