Union leaders say they’re braced for ‘war’ on public employees

The head of the Nevada AFL-CIO proclaimed Tuesday that “working families are under attack” by Republican lawmakers who want to weaken collective bargaining laws and pensions now that they control the Legislature.Danny Thompson, executive-secretary treasurer of the organization, told supporters at the Teamsters Local 14 union hall that the designated GOP Assembly speaker, John Hambrick, R-Las Vegas, had sent a letter to local governments soliciting ideas for changes in public employee collective bargaining — the workers’ right to negotiate pay and benefits.Thompson, a former assemblyman, said he’s been watching the Legislature for some 35 years and he had never seen such an offer, which he characterized as an open declaration that unions and their families would be under assault.“It’s as if they declared war on working families,” Thompson said, speaking to more than 50 workers and union leaders. “The attack on collective bargaining is evidently coming.”In response, Thompson said the AFL-CIO and its affiliated unions, which account for some 200,000 members, plan to send a more robust lobbying team to Carson City and to have workers urge voters to support union members in the battle.

Why would the unions want to wage war on public employees?

Public employee unions are the only unions which continue to grow. We all know the draw backs involved with public sector unions and their close ties to the Democrat Party. Nevada, and especially Las Vegas and Reno, have serious problem with the new public sector unions that were formed to organize the illegals as kitchen workers, hotel workers, etc. The gambling industry is not thriving and is very dependent on the low wage illegals. Pressure to legalize these workers is going to be strong.

They should probably not bring their “war” to Virginia.

From the Code of Virginia:

§ 40.1-55

Employee striking terminates, and becomes temporarily ineligible for, public employment.

Any employee of the Commonwealth, or of any county, city, town or other political subdivision thereof, or of any agency of any one of them, who, in concert with two or more other such employees, for the purpose of obstructing, impeding or suspending any activity or operation of his employing agency or any other governmental agency, strikes or willfully refuses to perform the duties of his employment shall, by such action, be deemed to have terminated his employment and shall thereafter be ineligible for employment in any position or capacity during the next twelve months by the Commonwealth, or any county, city, town or other political subdivision of the Commonwealth, or by any department or agency of any of them.

War on public employees? Sure, on the nonessential. But the real war needs to be on their unions.

So "working families" only pertains to Gov't employees?

What about the families who work to support them?

“It’s as if they declared war on working families,”

IMHO, to call most unionized government employees "working" is to defame productive workers everywhere.

Public unions must die. Not the members of them, but the whole concept is a complete lie. Never should have been allowed. If you want to work for USG, it is a privilege, you don’t get special bargaining rights via both a union and your votes.

Unions have been at war with working families since their inception, in favor of Government Employees.

—the Las Vegas R-J has an unrelated piece this morning about a Metro detective , in jail for beating up a hooker, who made $170,000 last year—guess that indicates that our “public servants” aren’t all underpaid-—
