India Rejects Climate Deal With Obama

India has rejected pleas from the Obama administration to enter into an agreement to put a future limit on its greenhouse gas emissions in order to fight global warming.

President Barack Obama went abroad hoping to strike a climate deal with India — the world’s third-largest greenhouse-gas emitter — in order to build support for an international global warming treaty ahead of a United Nations summit later this year. But India had other ideas.

Obama wanted India to announce it would peak its greenhouse gas emissions by a certain year, mirroring a pledge China made last year to peak its emissions by 2030. But India’s government refused, not wanting to have to make a China-sized promise on climate.

India could probably do without the type of global warming currently being experienced by New York and Boston.

India is still a developing country and does not want to be locked into the low-growth model Obama was demanding.

Good for them.

India is short electric power, short gas and oil supply and long in coal. They are not going to stop building and running coal plants. They have a growing population to keep happy and they aren’t buying what Obama is selling.

India can’t promise this because they would feel compelled to actually do the things they agree to do. China doesn’t have that problem.

A Chinese style agreement to do something in maybe a generation would have been meaningless, but it would have provided Obama with a fig leaf he would use to further his agenda with EPA executive orders. “See, China and India, the two most populous countries in the world, are working on climate change. We must do more to lead this charge.”

Yet another foreign policy triumph for Obama! As far as the "China-sized promise" goes,I thought all the Chinese agreed to do is think it over 15 years from now. Obama couldn't even get India to do that.

I especially like how they did this when they told Obama to screw off, and he backed out of the room.
