Slate: ‘Friends’ reruns no longer politically correct
Media Equalizer ^

File this under “the one where Friends fail to fits in with ‘modern gender politics'”.

By the standards of circa-2015 political correctness, does the long-running sitcom pass the test? The show that brought a huge young audience to NBC’s primetime lineup in the 1990s was apparently a hotbed of anti-gay, misogynistic antics and all-around bigotry.

That’s according to the historical revisionists over at Slate, where Ruth Graham has been taking notes while binge-watching reruns on Netflix. Could it be the next Amos ‘n Andy?

Isn’t the problem obvious? In the 1990s, PC extremism was still confined to college campuses, while a primitive, bitter-clinging America at-large had yet to be indoctrinated.

From her sofa, Graham has found appalling examples of behavior that “wouldn’t play” in 2015, finding some that come across as “painfully CBS”. Ouch!

I guess we’re just going to have to get use to gay transgendered porn streaming 24/7 since any heterocentrist living is now taboo.

You’re right.

Well, she’s not all that bad. But she is a bit askew, like Celine Dion.

The craziest part of it is that Chandler was being MOCKED for being sensitive about homosexuality.

“Friends” is what made the homely Jennifer Anniston a star.

I never thought Jennifer Anniston was homely. She's no C. Z-J, but who, in God's entire Creation is?

Still, Jennifer is like the kind of pretty girl next door that every guy in America had a crush on growing up in high school and felt lucky to take to the prom. Imperfections and all.

ROFL!

I love it. Big-mouth Julia Roberts. Huge mouth on that woman. Both length and width.

Would like to see one of those caricatures of her.

Some day, the producers of “Modern Family” will be vilified for being homophobic. Seem ridiculous? “Soap” was a continual soap-box for gay rights, but is vilified nowadays because the show lumps various “lifestyle choices” together. (Billy Crystal’s character, Jamie, was gay but also occasionally a cross-dresser.)

She did a voice over in one of my all-time favorite South Park episodes, the one when they skewered the environmentalists over the Rainforest.

I watched Friends once or twice and I thought it was boring and very PC. So how PC do you have to be now to gain acceptance?

What’s the new PC standard? All transsexuals all the time, all Muslims all the time, or what?

The only eps of Friends worth watching are those that featured Tom Selleck.

Hilarious. Friends was basically a standard bearer for the gay movement at the time. Ross’s wife divorced him and married a woman and the two women raised his child. Phoebe said, “Just think of all the love that baby is getting with two moms and a dad.” Then you have Chandler’s cross-dressing dad.

Ugh. Until about a year ago, I’d never seen this show. Now, because they sandwich it between Raymond and King of Queens, and I’m too lazy to change the channel, I know all this stuff about it.

By the way, King of Queens would be run off the air these days, too. When Deacon and his wife were separated, he said, “She’s turning my son gay! If he’s gay, I’ll accept it, but I don’t need her driving him to it!” Another time, he said, “One day, I want to visit my grandkids! Not my ‘bachelor son’ and his cats!”

I always read that as obvious sarcasm.

He was parodying the fact that everyone was so afraid of offending gays, anytime they would mention them, they had to append a statement like that anticipating the accusations of bigotry. Which of course, made that statement meaningless, since it was only being done to avoid confrontation.

My favorite Gilligan's Island line: Thurston Howell and Gilligan are roaming through the jungle at night, and come across a group of grass-skirted natives dancing around a bonfire. Gilligan and Howell are hiding behind the trees:

Gilligan: "Mr. Howell, do you think they're dangerous?"

Howell: "I don't know, Gilligan, but I'm sure they're not Republicans."
