Super Bowl's Arizona host may be on the hook for millions
CBS ^ | 1/24/15

....the mayor of Glendale, Arizona - home to Super Bowl XLIX - is questioning the money-making potential of this year's big game, CBS News' David Begnaud reports.

"I think if you looked in the till at the end of the day, I think you'll have less money in it than came in," said Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers.

Weiers suspects that when the sun sets on Super Bowl XLIX, the only real loser may be his city.

"I'm sure that we're going to spend $3 million," Weiers said. "I would hope, in tax revenues, that we can actually account for well over a million, probably 1.2, 3."

Roughly, that would be a $2 million loss....

You cannot serve God and mammon.

Anyone else remember when the NFL blackmailed the state over religious freedom? The legislature voted to PRESERVE religious freedom, but Roger Goodell and his minions hate it. And Brewer buckled.

NFL could pull Super Bowl if Arizona religious rights bill passes

Yup. That is indeed one way to tell that you have not made money on an event.

Cities compete for events like the Super Bowl, the Olympics, the World Cup. Sometimes you make money sometimes you lose money. And they build new stadiums to keep or attract a team to make them their home city.

Taxpayers need to hold politicians responsible for bad financial choices.

The situation, AFAIK, is that Glendale is stuck for a lot of the expenses surrounding the SB itself since the stadium is in its town, but that the bulk of the revenue is going to Phoenix, since that is where the fans are staying, and where the runup events are taking place. (P.S. My son lives in Tempe, on the other side of Phoenix from Glendale, and he wrangled a business trip to Denver in order to avoid having to work downtown this week.)

I guess Arizona is glad that they caved to the NFL and passed the law for the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

The State/City would have been better off without the holiday.

When I lived in Glendale the biggest attraction was the 25 cent movie theater.

One of the problems Glendale faces is the fact that they overextended themselves building a hockey arena and a football stadium, they could not afford...

Is that why the NHL Coyotes are now the "Arizona" Coyotes instead of the "Phoenix" Coyotes?

No, you idiot.
I used the word “identified” because if you ask someone unfamiliar with the valley, where the Cardinals and the Coyotes play their home games, the answer is PHOENIX.
As Professor Gill used to say READ, do not assume.

I am not an idiot, and I do not understand why you are so hostile.

Between last season and this season, the name of the NHL hockey franchise known as the Coyotes changed from “Phoenix” Coyotes to “Arizona” Coyotes. I was simply wondering if it had anything to do with the fact that they are not actually located in Phoenix.

However, since you have chosen to be a dickhead about it, you can GFY.

How about reversing that thought process and save the (majority) taxpayers a load of grief.

If a city has the infrastructure, land, demographics, etc. they buy the land, build their own stadium and charge rates required to them whatever $$ they deem needed.

They can then rent out the space for other events, charging $X.

Instead, we have like we do here in Jax, FL: the taxpayer ripped off (esp. those that cared NOT for a team), to make all ‘ready’ for a stadium, tax cuts for the monopoly team(s), a stadium that sits 90% unused, traffic/police/etc. when it IS in use....all for 30+ years to pay the damn thing off; and numerous MILLIONS along the way to keep it up and ‘attractive’ (they just installed a pool and the largest jumbo-tron. Ummm, we could have used the $45M+ to build a desalination plant - esp. since they all gripe the St. Johns is being drained!)

Taxpayers should NOT be on the hook for these monopolies.

No that changed before the move. Much like the Phoenix Cardinals name change, they realized a lot of the state doesn’t actually like Phoenix and thought that people from outside of Phoenix (Tucson specifically) were not coming to the games because of it. Didn’t really pan out in either case. And moving both teams to Glendale didn’t help, being as it’s on the far north end of Phoenix and basically another hour away.

It’s best not to argue with an idiot - onlookers may not be able to tell the difference. :)
