Governor: Legalizing pot was bad idea
The Hill ^ | January 23, 2015 | Kevin Cirilli

Colorado’s decision to legalize marijuana was a bad idea, the state’s governor said Friday.

Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat who opposed the 2012 decision by voters to make pot legal, said the state still doesn’t fully know what the unintended consequences of the move will be.

If I could've waved a wand the day after the election, I would've reversed the election and said, 'This was a bad idea,’” Hickenlooper said Friday on CNBC's “Squawk Box.”

“You don't want to be the first person to do something like this,” he said.

He said that he tells other governors to “wait a couple of years” before legalizing marijuana as Colorado continues to navigate an unknown, non-existing federal regulatory landscape for the industry.

“There's a whole regulatory environment... that really regulates alcohol,” he said. “We're starting from scratch and we don't have a federal partner because [marijuana] is still illegal federally.”

In February 2014, the Obama administration released guidelines for the marijuana industry indicating the federal officials would not target financial institutions or businesses engaging in selling pot as long as those businesses were compliant with state laws.

Despite the guidelines, banks are reluctant to finance marijuana businesses in states where it is legal because federal law still lists marijuana as an illegal drug. Congress would need to pass a law removing that language.

Marijuana is legal in four states: Colorado, Oregon, Alaska and Washington. Congress has blocked the District of Columbia from legalizing pot after voters in November cast ballots that they wanted to make the drug legal.

You didn’t ask my opinion, but here is what happened with my two boys now in their 40’s. Husband had problems with alcohol, but always worked. I did not smoke or drink. Older son 18 years in military and special forces, married with children. Younger son, used pot and LSD, dropped out when father went off the wagon again. I asked a pot using friend with a small business to take him under his wing and teach him a skill. He is now happily married with kids, and good work ethic.
1) My husband’s alcohol use undermined moral authority.
2) Pot being illegal did not keep my son from using it. It also did not keep him from growing up and making a good life for himself.

The guy smoking pot to the destruction of his life/his family’s life is no different than the guy drinking alcohol to the the same point. But one we find socially acceptable. Because of their lobbying machinery in Washington.

Humanity has at least a 10 million year history with Alcohol. Here in this country, pot usage is relatively new.

The founding fathers grew hemp, which is slightly different than pot. And the reason they grew it is because it went into the manufacture of rope which was used in navy ships of the line. They grew it because it was a strategic military need.. Any attempt to paint the founding fathers as a bunch of “wake ‘n bake” potheads is just silly.

I disagree. Attempts to paint the founders as growers of hemp for narcotic purposes is a DELIBERATE LIE.

It is a purposeful effort to mislead people as to the truth of our history and present it in a manner that is helpful to their efforts to legalize drugs.

Once again, it isn't silly, it's LYING. It is willful deception.

You're blatantly cooking your books: the history of all (pre)humanity on one hand, but of this country on the other.

If you are telling me you want to be an anti alcohol warrior as well as an anti drug addiction anti marijuana warrior then go for it.

But IMO don't point to one piece of sh!t to try and pass another big piece of sh!t known to gravitate to even higher drug use.

My point about major over use of pot is that is only IMO justified for people with REAL highly chronic conditions like cancer. The rest using it are all just are recreational drug users as are those claiming a back ache and so forth to get pot when they could use ibuprofen and so forth.
Much of this is recreational drug addiction getting on the back of things needed for the terminally ill. Pathetic IMO!

Bunk, it is a brain altering drug with negative effects for regular users. I still remember my mom working prison ministry and finding all the violent offenders were pretty much always major pot users.

One day after arguing with a pot head about the probabilities of pot causing a "psychotic break" I decided to see if I could find out how many famous serial killers used pot.

The results? Pretty much all of them. I actually can't think of one that didn't. Dahmer, Gacy, Bundy, Berkowitz, Ridgeway, Manson, and so on.

Looks like that "Reefer Madness" argument was not so far off as people have been led to believe.

How many people smoke pot before they smoke cigarettes? I never knew any pot smokers who were not cigarette smokers. Cigarettes are far more addictive than pot. Have any studies been done comparing cigarettes with other substances as the true gateway drug?

How many pot users are serial killers? Almost none of them.

He doesn’t want competition from other states eating away the profits state makes from it.

That's a one-sided summary. He also said “we're making real progress” on fine-tuning pot policy, and “The studies we've seen of the people in Colorado [show] the people who were smoking before it was legal are still doing it, and people that weren't smoking it still aren't.” http://www.cnbc.com/id/102363021

Just so everybody knows, this guy is Mr "DOPE PUSHER" Himself, so any facts or figures he cites are already cherry picked to support his desire to see his indulgence legalized.

Beyond that, it's too soon to be looking at any studies coming out of Colorado. It's only been two years and three months. We need at least a decade of data to even began to predict a trend.

No, causation is a leap the researchers did NOT make. From your link:

"Whether cannabis can trigger a primary psychotic disorder that would not have otherwise occurred is unclear. However, in most individuals who use cannabis, psychosis does not develop"

Well *YOU* certainly seem to have a psychosis. You will not stop pushing drugs. It is about the only thing you talk about on this website. Drugs Drugs Drugs Drugs!!!!!

It is your focused obsession on this topic that certainly resembles a psychosis, if it is not in fact an actual psychosis.

I know another pot-head on another website who has been posting a constant stream of pro-drug propaganda for seven years. He too will not shut up about it. It's like the dope-head version of "gay" rights.

For some reason, both the homosexuals and the dopers want to keep pushing this stuff into our faces instead of keeping it in their bedrooms where it belongs.

Buying alcohol at 18 is illegal in all states. And, if as a parent, you didn’t teach your child right from wrong and making wise decisions before he/she turned 18, you started way too late. That is not the state’s responsibility; that is your responsibility.

When you want the state to illegalize what you don’t want your kids to be tempted by, you live in a nanny state. How is that working out for you?

Pot is the only drug that has the staunch proud thing going on. Nobody defends alcohol or any other drug like the virtuous drug, marijuana user/defender.

dopers want to keep pushing this stuff into our faces instead of keeping it in their bedrooms where it belongs.

Many - I'd bet most - pot smokers would be delighted to quietly and legally buy pot at a licensed store and smoke it at home. So let them.

Here is an artist's depiction of "ConservingFreedom" below.

OK, that was funny.

Opium and alcohol were powerful intoxicants - and legal - in 1790.

And here he is again telling half-truths. Opium was very uncommon in the United States in 1790. There was no market for it and little supply. Most of the people who had access to it were Doctors. It was used as a medicine, not as a recreational pastime.

Alcohol has been with humanity for 10 million years, and it is caused by fermentation. It is ubiquitous in availability, and in human history.

Exactly, the state saying it is illegal is defacto and tacit approval.
