Schubert: "How Ulfru Fishes"

Poem by Mayrhofer, and one of Schubert's best. My favorite line is, "The earth is surpassingly beautiful, but safe it is not!"

I’m just doing a lot of Schubert. Out of 650+ songs he wrote, there must be a hundred songs about different kinds of bodies of water.

My license plate is

40+pir8

Can’t tell you how many people have actually gotten out of their cars to ask me what it means. On the other hand I get honks when going on the freeway from Parrotheads. Lol

Suzanne is one of my all time favorite songs.

The original by Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen - Suzanne

And this duet with Judy Collins

Leonard Cohen and Judy Collins “Suzanne” 1967

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UASy-aY2T0

As for the meaning.

I hear it as a story of love, temptation and redemption.

My favorite verse:

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said “All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them”
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

I>Talking Heads - Take me to the River 1980 - That song is included on my purely personal list of top five best cover versions

Mine too. I remember when that came out in ’78 when I was in HS. I was just getting away from “bubble gum” pop music and rebelling against “Disco” and discovering bands and artists like the Talking Heads, The Police, Blondie, Warren Zevon, Dire Straits, The Cars, Kate Bush, Little Feat, Patti Smith Group, Elvis Costello …also very into early Rush.

Try Post #171. It’s a piano arrangement by Liszt of a Schubert song, and it’s amazingly beautiful.

I “discovered “ Leonard Cohen about 6 years ago.

Everything he does is incredible and his world tour a couple of years ago was a sellout.

Another one of his that I adore is “Who by Fire?”. That one I can understand .

Thanks for your information and the links.
