Here is an interesting link with a number of charts and videos, plus discussions. One chart shows the ups and downs over time with the Roman Warm and Medieval Warms interspersed with the Dark Ages Cold Period and the Little Ice Age. There is/are video/s titled Farewell to Old Sea Ice which shows the ebb and flow of winter and summer ice from 1980 to 2009. Especially interesting is the movement of the red buoys over time. You may have to click the little circulate symbol in the lower left corner of the video to make it start.

Some commentors point out that the good arctic ice data is only 30 to 40 years old, and lot about larger cycles is not yet known.
