Say "P85D" to Tesla owners and fans, and you will see the drooling and twitching and heavy breathing and lustful stares--and more drooling--that Tesla's fastest, highest-performance electric car brings.
The same happens with the word "Hellcat" for fans of high-powered Hemi V-8 performance.
Now, courtesy of two owners--each convinced that their car is the fastest, baddest beast on the road--we know what happens when the two cars face off on the drag strip.
Two days ago at Palm Beach International Raceway, a Tesla Model S P85D and a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat competed in the traditional quarter-mile drag race.
Hint: It's no contest. At all. And the quieter car wins decisively.

If I forget to "recharge" my car, or it's raining and I don't feel like stopping on the way home, or I'm in a hurry, or .... about anything....
No problem. I tank up in the morning and am good to go for another 400+ miles. Enough for about a full day's worth of driving, more or less.
Try doing that with an electric car. *This* is the key issue. Setting all preferences and engineering problems aside, you can't get the electricity from the power plant into the battery fast enough to be feasible. Indeed, those laws of physics are pesky.

What exactly do you have against Tesla and how much money have they received from the Feds?
You need to do your homework on Tesla Motors. It was founded in 2003, created its first prototype in 2006, started production of its first car, the Tesla Roadster, in 2008, and its second car, the Model S, in 2012. This is not a company that sprang up yesterday with a 5-year plan.
Furthermore, you should research the difference between growth companies and mature companies. The only reason that Tesla does not report profits today is because they invest all their would-be profits into growth: things like SuperChargers and the GigaFactory. Oh, and in case you are not up to date, they have paid back all their government loans, with interest.

A Volt would fit what you are asking for. It has a 40-mile electric battery (50 miles in the upcoming 2016 model) as well as a gasoline engine with a 340 mile gas tank so that you never have to worry about being stranded. Basically, when the battery is out of juice, it turns into a regular gasoline car.
As an aside, there was a lot of fear-mongering about fires with the Volt. However, after four years on the road, a grand total of zero fires have been started by a Volt in the real world. Also, owners of four-year-old Volts are reporting virtually no battery capacity loss.

You are right about the electric motors, they produce maximum torque immediately. Combine that with 4 motors and 4WD and it is over before the green light comes on.
4WD (OK, all wheel drive for y’all euros) is absolutely unbeatable. Used to have a TSI AWD Eagle Talon and it was unbelievable how fast it could take off from a standing start, then 12 lbs. turbo boost would hit and it was bye bye to even SS Camaros.
