New plan calls for Miami-Dade mayor to take reins on sea rise
Miami Herald ^ | 1/18/15 | Jenny Staletovich

Miami-Dade County’s task force on rising seas wants the county mayor to take the reins on the mounting problem and will propose a suite of resolutions before commissioners on Wednesday to address the issue.

The measures will serve as “marching orders” to increase the county’s response to sea rise, County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa said during a meeting with Miami Herald editors last week. She sponsored the legislation carrying out the task force recommendations as one of her last acts as commission chairwoman.

The resolutions ask Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez to take formal oversight and dedicate staff and resources to shepherd the county’s attack on climate change. One resolution would also ask the administration to speed up the planning process by hiring engineers or other experts to develop a capital plan to fortify the county’s vast infrastructure against the dangers of sea rise — everything from roads to bridges to sewer structures. Another resolution also calls for a comprehensive study on flooding and saltwater intrusion along with a time frame for carrying out changes and source of money.

What stoned-out-of his/her gourd editor let that ridiculous headline be used? ‘’... mayor to take reins on sea rise’’. Who is this mayor, Neptune? AquaMan?

Miami-Dade County’s task force on rising seas

Listen to a task force? No way. Maybe if it was a blue ribbon commission (snicker)

I have experienced the temperatures at the beach change as much as 10 degrees or more and there was no mass flooding. There is NO SUCH THING as the “right temperature”. There are all types of temperatures in the world at all times. It’s just the matter of where you are geographically located, and what time of the year is it.

Therefore, to say the world has to be “X” temperature at one place at all time is complete rubbish…. There are so many factors, seasons and even things like where we are in our orbit, etc….

The one thing that does affect our climate is our Sun. It affects all the temperatures on Earth. But we can’t control it.

The greenies are talking about breaking the law: Antoine Lavoisier’s law of conservation of mass.
But when a lefty is insisting, “It’s the principle of the thing!” you can be sure it’s the federal grant money.

"If arctic and antarctic ice are increasing, how are sea levels rising?"

Believe it or not, there's an answer to that question.

Try this experiment in your own kitchen: Take a glass half full of water. Add a bunch of ice cubes. Mark the water level on the side of the glass.

Then wait. When the ice has melted, check the water level ......

(Surprise!)

It is actually less than 1 foot:

for Miami Beach:

Mean Sea Level Trend 8723170 Miami Beach, Florida :

" The mean sea level trend is 2.39 millimeters/year with a 95% confidence interval of +/- 0.43 mm/yr based on monthly mean sea level data from 1931 to 1981 which is equivalent to a change of 0.78 feet in 100 years."

For Key West :

Mean Sea Level Trend 8724580 Key West, Florida:

" The mean sea level trend is 2.31 millimeters/year with a 95% confidence interval of +/- 0.15 mm/yr based on monthly mean sea level data from 1913 to 2013 which is equivalent to a change of 0.76 feet in 100 years."

Note that with a longer dataset, the Key West trend is lower.

Perhaps the mayor could push for "100 year" building regulations: "all buildings must have the first floor at least .78 feet above maximum high tide".

shibumi, please, help me out here, what did I miss?

The question was, if the arctic and antarctic ice (levels) are increasing (growing, not melting), how are sea levels rising?

The half glass of water full of ice cubes that melts will cause the level in the glass to rise, right?

I’m confused, how does that answer the question? Maybe this is sarcasm making fun of lefty logic.
