MANILA — Pope Francis waded into the global debate on climate change and the environment on Sunday, saying in the text of a speech that man was destroying nature and betraying God's calling to be stewards of creation.
Francis offered his thoughts about the environment and climate change for the second time in four days at a rally with young people at a Manila university on the last full day of a week-long Asian tour that has taken him to Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
He did not read all of a speech prepared for delivery at the university, improvising after he was moved by the story of an abandoned girl. When he does this, the Vatican says the prepared text is official.
"As stewards of God’s creation, we are called to make the earth a beautiful garden for the human family. When we destroy our forests, ravage our soil and pollute our seas, we
betray that noble calling," he said in the text.
Another line he read to the crowd noted that "this country, more than many others, is likely to be seriously affected by climate change".

As a joke I might have said “I wouldn’t join any church that would have me for a member”, but actually I think associating with such an org would further tarnish my reputation.

Reaping the bounty of the earth is neither good or bad, if done with a clear conscience of faith. After hundreds of millions of years, the earth has not always been the paradise it is now and certainly will not remain so in the future. We are in a Goldilocks period and yet we fret over inevitable change.

I agree with this, which is why opposing socialism is so important. Nowhere has environmental destruction and a blind eye to the consequences of pollution been more rampant than in communist/socialist dictatorships. The idea that conservatives are anti-environment is untrue, and shouldn’t be tolerated.
If any of us believed that the data were truly showing/supportive of the anthropomorphic destruction of our planetary environment, we would be in favor of aggressive action. As it is, most of us, I would presume, are in favor of seeking out technological advancements that allow us to produce cleaner energy in a sustainable manner. We don’t, however, think that in the absence of those technologies, unilaterally destroying our economy by drastically altering our energy use makes any sense - especially given that the data are by no means definitive, or even consistent.
Taking the lid off of the environmental pandora’s box in this manner pretty well guarantees it will be a power play.
A more thoughtful pontiff would have arranged for some kind of quiet private study. Not hopping on the nearest bandwagon that sounded vaguely like Christian teaching.
If there is something like an environmental sin it would be like the gross pollution in Beijing, where the tradeoff is pretty much only the filthy lucre that Francis is turning his nose up at. When it is a question of human survival vs. a nice environment the question is more difficult.
Comrade Pope espousing his Marxist/Leninist economics and his environmental Global Warming Jihad is definitely not gathering a conservative following.

The Pope did not say that. We are supposed to respect all creation because it comes from God. We should treat it as the gift it is. Which means to use it wisely for our benefit and not to squander it. Being stewards of creation does not mean to worship nature. It does mean that we must remember that as Christians we are to embrace practices that will uphold the dignity of the human person and help them live better lives. Destroying land and water that people depend on for their livelyhoods is wrong.

My parents are Roman Catholic. I have told them that I am afraid that the Catholic Church has just joined ECUSA, PCUSA, UCC, and ELCA. It was hard for them, but they replied that they thought I could be right, especially when Cardinal Burke was given the bums rush.
It comes down to not which church you go to, but in the end where do you stand with Christ.

Yes it does. That statement by itself is not even controversial.

The problem is that the world is dying without Christ. And the problem is that Christians are being slaughtered as we speak. I would love to hear a major leader in the Christian world actually evangelizing. And speaking up for the martyred brethren.
