Biya has called for international military help to fight the Islamist militant group that has seized swathes of northern Nigeria and is threatening neighbors who share borders with the northeastern zones occupied by the group.
Boko Haram, which aims to carve out an Islamist state in northern Nigeria, has stepped up attacks in the region as Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy, prepares for a crucial Feb. 14 presidential election.
The group has also carried out a number of attacks and raids across the border in northern Cameroon, prompting the government to deploy thousands of troops including special forces.

The problem is that the Nigerian military is riddled with corruption. Most of their defence budget is used to line the pockets of the generals, morale among troops is extremely low, and the army is not adequately equipped to deal with the threat.

Goodluck Jonathan is a Christian, and a zoologist, and although it isn’t saying much, probably the best leader Nigeria has ever elected. Just a short time ago he said there hadn’t been a Nigerian election (independence 1960) where people didn’t buy and sell votes; the upsurge in attacks by Boko Haram come during the runup to the next national election there, what a surprise. If he loses, it doesn’t take much consideration to realize that as bad as the situation has been, it will get much worse. The country is the fourth-largest LNG exporter, and still burns off a lot of gas.

I’ve been asking the same questions on other threads regarding this mess and so far, I haven’t found an answer. I remember the same thing. I’m sure it wasn’t just to locate and retrieve the kidnapped girls as that never happened...

The north is mostly Muslim, the south mostly Christian. Going after the Muslims too hard would spark a civil war.
