Liberal MEP Marietje Schaake flagged on Wednesday (14 January) a proposal by US Senator John McCain to repeal the 'Jones Act'.
McCain proposed an amendment for the full repeal of the Jones Act, which he considers an antiquated law that has for too long hindered free trade, made US industry less competitive, and raised prices for American consumers.
The 1920 federal law requires every ship transporting goods or person between US ports to be made in the US, and sail under a US flag, to be US-owned and crewed at least 75% by US citizens.

We cruise a lot and that part of the Jones Act has been a problem sometimes.
The British once had similar laws governing shipping for the American colonies, which ultimately helped spark the Revolution...they was called the Navigation Acts.
Great!!
Turkish, Lebanese and Iranian ships with muzzie crews in all our ports!!!
WHAT COULD POSSIBLEY GO WRONG WITH THAT?!?
You ever hear about "flags of convenience?"
The reason the Jones Act was passed in the first place, was because ship owners were screwing over American workers by hiring dirt cheap foreign workers, yet had access to US ports by which they made very substantial profit.
To evade US restrictions, to this day, most ships are registered in Liberia and a few other places with almost no maritime laws. However, the Jones Act kept them from at least exploiting merchant seamen on the US coasts.
Yes they do, but those ships cannot load cargo in a US port
and take it to another US port for discharge. The Jones Act
deals with the loading and unloading of cargo that originates and is unloaded between US ports.
A foreign flag ship cannot load a container in NYC and unload that same in Portland, ME for example.
It means you can’t take a cruise without a passport. All cruises must stop in a foreign port. No Eastern or Western Coastal cruise or cruise to Alaska without a stop in Canada or Mexico.
Just from what I am reading on this post about the Jones Act & considering who is sponsoring it’s repeal,is,I believe, enough reason to retain it.
yes, it’s stupid.
