Politico Magazine: Idea of ‘Defensive Gun Ownership’ a ‘Tragic Myth’

On January 14, Politico Magazine (PM) ran a story suggesting the claim that guns are used for defense purposes more often than ill-intent is wrong, and the whole idea behind “defensive gun ownership” is a “tragic myth.”

PM defined the “tragic myth” as the belief “that millions of gun owners successfully use their firearms to defend themselves and their families from criminals.” They pointed to the dearth of academic support for defensive gun uses (DGUs) in “public health literature” and listed three instances in which a homeowner fired a gun in what they thought was a self-defense situation, but which later turned out otherwise. The gunshot wound was fatal in one of the three incidents.

This a pristine example of the Progressive mind-set. They seek a transformation of our society away from endowed rights from God, secured by the Constitution, to a society whose rights are determined by "experts," authorized by the State.

Ensconced today in the Executive branch, it is those experts, not the people, whose job it is to be constantly assessing which of our behaviors are "sustainable" and with unchecked power, seeing to it that we comply.

Apparently, this never happens anywhere in the country by private citizens:

Thank for clearing that up for us pot-litico. IPOS!

My challenge to Politico’s authors and editors: Plant a prominent yard sign declaring “This house is a gun free zone”.

These people will never, ever, stop until we are all slaves to a huge, progressive (cultural Marxist), central government. We are almost there thanks to the Democrats and Republicans.

>>Canyon County Idaho is the 10th best armed county in the nation and yet the crime rate just isn’t that high. Most folks simply don’t worry about carjackings, robberies, and the like. If guns cause crime the counties in the article I provided the link for should have the highest crime rates in the nation. It’ time to change the narrative: Guns stop crime.

Canyon county is not a good example of how guns stop crime.

According to the 2010 census, the population is 0.6% black.

If used a gun is defined as firing it, they need a new definition.

see this, Pops, gimme you're money.

See this. basically, run.

runs away. Gun "used" defensively for protection.

The possibility of an armed victim is a deterrent that will reduce crime for even the unarmed. If you are among the unarmed, you are welcome, guns make it safer for everyone.

The writers of Politico are not very well-read.

In that case, the we otherwise law-abiding citizens will just have to take a cue from Politico’s beloved teen criminals and possess our guns without benefit of state oversight and regulation. The only difference will be that we didn’t steal ours.

The number one benefit is deterrence which doesn’t even require the use of your gun and doesn’t even require you to have a gun on your person.

While it is not possible to measure the number of crimes which are not committed against armed or potentially armed citizens, never let these ass...ls try to couch an anti 2nd amendment argument under the banner of self defense. The second amendment goes beyond self defense into the virtual underpinning of our entire form of government and how it should be fearful of the populace.

Kinda like the old Dirty Harry movies. Except, “Well punk do I have a gun or don’t I? Does it hold more than 6 rounds?”. :>}

They pointed to the dearth of academic support for defensive gun uses (DGUs) in “public health literature”

Imagine someone at the CDC turning in a funding request to his boss to study the positive effects of gun ownership. Which would he hear?

1. crickets
2. derisive laughter
3. the thud of the door hitting his ass on his way out of his former job at the CDC

The lack of academic support in the public health literature for positive effects of gun ownership is about as surprising as the lack of academic support in the twelfth century Vatican for a sun-centered universe.

Typical Leftist/Socialist: fringe shows the ‘norm’ (accidental gun discharges/etc.), but reverse when they want (’few’ voter fraud = no need for IDs)
