Republican lawmakers determined to counter President Barack Obama on immigration want to advance solutions of their own, starting with a border security bill and perhaps moving on to tackle other aspects of the broken system.
It's a goal House Republicans have tried and failed to achieve for the past two years, even as the Senate passed a comprehensive, bipartisan bill that ultimately died because of inaction in the House.
But as House and Senate Republicans met for a joint retreat in this capital of chocolate and sweets, lawmakers said that with the Senate now under GOP control, they have a new opportunity to take aim at immigration with their own, step-by-step approach. Many viewed the Senate's bill as amnesty because it included a path to citizenship for immigrants in the country illegally, and they want to take a much different tack.
"It is happening now because members want it to happen, the American people want it to happen," Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Pa., a conservative on the issue, said Friday as the retreat wrapped up and lawmakers headed out of the homey Hershey Lodge to board buses and vans back to Washington.
"We should do a border bill first, secure our borders," Barletta said. "It's a big job, and it's going to be a tough bill."
Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, who chairs the House Committee on Homeland Security, outlined proposed border legislation to lawmakers at the retreat, including penalties for select administration officials who fail to comply with border security provisions within the bill.

“Republicans Plan to Offer Their Own Solutions on Immigration”
Republicans Plan to cave on Immigration - fixed it
What solutions? What is to solve? ENFORCE CURRENT LAW!!! SECURE THE BORDER AS REQUIRED. What is so frickin’ hard about that?
> “broken system”
What a tiresome and misleading phrase. How can we know if something is “broken” if it’s not used?
Enforce existing law.
Simpler solution: deny welfare of any kind to all immigrants.
Many will largely self-deport. Those who can support themselves and their families will be granted work permits, renewable every year if they are needed.
They’re going to open the border, then take our money and our freedom.
We can thank them now. :)
The Republican “solution” will be written by the Chamber of Commerce that only wants cheap labor. The GOP stabs its base in the back once again.
“Boehner won!”
The real difficulty is that they have failed to identify and pursue what is actually the problem. It is not immigration. It is a president who refuses to do the job designated by the Constitution, and a Congress that refuses to hold the president accountable as designated by the Constitution. We tried to solve the problem by making it clear through our votes that we wanted the anti-Constitutional behavior to end. But Congress, even one with majority status given to the opposition party by voters, still refuses to do its constitutional duty and would rather pretend that there is some imagined immigration problem that needs fixing instead.
We the people have been fighting these govt. officials who hate US sovereignty and want to bestow US citizenship on the world. We have only one choice as an electorate. Remove them all from office. Every last politician who votes for any change in immigration needs to be removed because they are intentionally ignoring the real problem. We need to let them know that a vote for any adjustment in the immigration laws will be proof they are ignoring the actual problem, ignoring their oath of office and have abdicated their constitutional authority.
Ever see all the “Conservatives right here on FR that make excuses for that? Things like “Fences don’t work” and “I’d vote for Rick Perry (SPeaker for LaRaza and Illegal education legislator)” and “Vote for the R (who just gave us this) no matter what?
Thats whats so frickin’ hard about it. The GOP knows their online liberal friends have their back for NOT letting the laws be enforced and support fully their efforts to interfere with an end to illegal migration.
No one in the country illegally should EVER be granted citizenship. Any citizenship must be as a result of an individual following proper procedures filed within their own country.
Close the border
Close airports, ports
Close abused visas
End birthright citizenship
All immigration must follow the legal process
The only thing I haven’t made my mind up about is citizens of a dictatorship fleeing oppression to our country. I’m talking about legitimate oppression and a legitimate need to flee.
It is not broken laws it is a broken system that does not enforce the laws.
Secure the damn borders and ship out the invaders.
