I was out camping in the woods outside of town with friends when I was 8 to 10 years old. Campfire and all.

When I was 5 my mother used to let me and my 6 y.o. sister walk to the corner grocery store alone.

Says something about how American society has changed since I was a kid.

It appears that the breakdown of trust is irreversible.

I walked to and from school 3 miles every day when I was a tween - alone.

Without parental accompaniment.

Really the hysteria over kids walking to and from school alone is just sad.

They don’t allow kids to be responsible for their own safety anymore. We truly have become The Pussy Nation.

My walk to elementary school was uphill both ways.

In today’s world, I probably would not let my children be that far away from home to walk home by themselves.

I am quite old, and in my time as a child, I roamed the neighborhood by myself and rode my bicycle to the school library which was over a mile from my house. No one thought of a child not being safe to do that.

As a young woman, I had a flat tire on my way to Tyler, Texas. Two black men stopped and changed my tire for me. It never crossed my mind those men might harm me. I had a flat and these nice men changed it. If that happened today, I’d lock myself in the car and call AAA and wait for them to come change the tire. Today is not like it was years ago.

I walked my sister to school every day starting when she was 6. I was 10. During the summer and other non-school days my mom scooted us five kids out the door in the morning to play on our own. Same for all the kids in the neighborhood. No matter how far we wandered, we knew enough to be back for lunch and dinner. Times have changed.

I used to do this all the time when I was a kid. Not alone, but with a brother or two, but crime was higher then (1970s) then now, supposedly.

Liberals in a liberal county in a liberal state getting hassled by a liberal state organization.

I’m feeling a little bit of schadenfreude.

Maybe if we executed child molesters, it would be safe to let your children outside alone. As it is, child molesters are allowed to roam the streets and kidnap children.

Luckily there was a mountain of snow between me and my school that child molesters refuse to climb.

When my sister was seven, she hopped a bus to NYC. When we heard about it years later, my mother told her she should have let her know she was going.

This story doesn’t sound right. There must be more to it.

Plenty of six-year-olds wander freely in most neighborhoods nowadays - at least in this area (NJ and PA). As for the 10-year-old, if you live within a mile of school, bus service typically isn’t provided, and 3rd-graders (age 8 or so) are considered old enough to walk the mile to school alone.

When we were kids, all over the country, we most often walked home from school. I walked to school, alone, from my neighborhood through a wooded area and on through a different neighborhood, as a first grader. NO ONE would have thought to get negatively excited about it. Pampered kids don’t grow up as well as kids from whom more is expected.
