Magpul announces GL9 Glock 17 PMAG

Go ahead and read that headline again. Yes, Magpul is making a magazine for the world’s most reliable pistol, the Glock 17. Cryptically titled the PMAG 17 GL9, this polymer replacement for the standard Glock 17 magazine appears to match the original’s reliability to a tee. It differs from the original with the inclusion of a stippled baseplate and bright orange follower, the former is to aid in magazine retention during reloads.

One detail that appears to be missing is whether the magazines feature metal feed lips or a metal skeleton like factory magazines. If this magazine were made by any company other than Glock or Magpul, it’d be a pass for most serious shooters. Since compromising an otherwise reliable platform’s magazine durability for no perceivable gains is short-sighted at best. Which isn’t to say that metal feed lips make or break durability, but they don’t hurt it.

Soft grip and limp wrist can cause any semi auto handgun/mag combo to jam. The worst offender I’ve ever shot, even with proper technique was a Khar 9mm.

Like their 40 rounders for AR.

I buy extras just to show to leftards to watch them wet their panties.

I’ll take that advice. Had a Glock mag swell on me, not real happy about that. And Santa brought me a Sig. Oh, well, if I must... ;-)

In what way, how old was it, what caliber?

One of the original Glock mags, came with the gun about ten years ago. Model 22, .40 S&W. One fine day I went to pop it out and ended up damn near prying it out. Not good. The other mags are fine, and it certainly wasn’t that tight going in or I’d have noticed. I have two Glocks, a 22 and a 19, and nothing like that ever happened to either of them before.

Thanks for the explanation, I'm interested in all things Glock and possible troubles.

G 17, 9mm, my number one self defense, up close pistol.

The AK pmag sucks. The gen2 is supposed to have metal lips and lug like the original bakelites.

I wouldnt buy the Glock mag unless it has meta lips.

They're great guns. I'm actually a 1911 guy in a polymer world, but I wouldn't hesitate to tote a Glock and I've done so.

Did the first gen mags have the metal sleeve inside? I know a buddy of mine that was in the FBI said if they ever had a jam the first thing they did was throw away the mag. For the most part the Glocks functioned extremely well. Most of my pistols have never had a malfunction. I have had one with my Glock 27, and one with my duty HK. The Glock was a mag issue. The P2000 jam was due to shooting this weird “green” ammo which got the guns very dirty, then going to lunch and coming back and shooting more. The grime left behind by the green ammo was almost like sludge. I just wiped my thumb across the feed ramp and it started behaving. Never had any problems with normal duty ammo.

I honestly don’t remember, and the RO gave me the same advice you just did, get rid of it, and I did. I don’t have enough spares for that piece is the real issue. Now I have a Sig to feed (that also takes .40 Smith and lo and behold! Santa left me a .357 Sig barrel and a couple of mags as well). It’s kind of a nice problem to have, but I still need a few Glock mags.

“The HK USP is probably the most reliable handgun.”

I evolved from a Glock, to Sig, to the USP. No complaints.

Did a lot of thinking before I bought a Glock, especially the 9mm part.

Number one, I liked the feel of it in my hand, natural fit.
Not all pistols feel the same, I guess.

The 9mm has little kick and helps me keep on target, especially if shooting instinctively and fast.
Practice that about as much as controlled aimed fire, plus it's fun :)

9mm Remington Golden Sabers will do about the same damage as a .45.

Trying to make a decision on a good sub-compact right now.
Won't be a Glock though, want something with a "real" safety with one in the pipe.

Issues on Sig 938.

Dropping mag while shooting
Very finicky on ammo,

Sig replaced first one, second one is a keeper.

I had a SIG P-225. I had it jam just once. That made it the only SIG which ever jammed for me.

It did make me wonder if the single stack mags were less reliable than the double stack ones in 9mm.
