Frigate.
Because after Obama's defense cuts, wussy policies and pansy-assed suicidal rules of engagement we're not allowed to say F___ it.

Is it littorally a frigate?

Frigate ...?
Frigate, Frigate, ... I kind of like the sound of that, said the CINC.
I decree: call them all Frigates.
And I will spend the rest of the day decreeing Frigate, Frigate, Frigate, Frigate them all. Frigate the Tea Party. Frigate with Boehner. Frigate on the golf course. Frigate with Reggie.
It’s good to be CINC.

Not even a 76mm let alone a 5” and no AAW to speak of - even the OHPs had at least SM1s. Wonder how many SSMs and Hellfires they can carry.

Recent news releases have suggested they may get the Norwegian missile that was demonstrated at Rimpac 2014.

tomorrow, the white house will announce, "under the president's watch, we have increased the number of major surface combatants in the navy by [number of little crappy ships]"

We’ve actually danced this dance before with the DE’s. Scared hell out of the enemy IIRC.

What the rest of the world was calling a frigate (one step down from a destroyer) we were calling a destroyer escort (DE). What we called a frigate at the time was really a “destroyer leader” hence the DL pennant number at the time. Those got redesignated as cruisers.
As for the Little Crappy Ship, you have the size of a frigate, the functionality of a corvette, at the price of a real cruiser.

“Behemoth” or “dreadnought” would be good too.

The Ticonderoga class AEGIS cruisers were originally called destoyers. In fact I have an early briefing package that names the Ticoderoga as DDG-47.
Story I heard was some congressman asked how a DDG could possibly cost so much. Navy response: Did I say destroyer? No no no! It's a cruiser!"
