AFGE Applauds Bills to Provide Federal Employees with 3.8% Pay Raise in 2016

Bills by Rep. Connolly, Sens. Schatz, Cardin, would provide federal employees with fair increase

WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. applauded legislation introduced today in the House and Senate to provide federal employees with a 3.8 percent pay raise in 2016.

The House bill was introduced by Representative Gerry Connolly of Virginia, while the Senate bill was introduced by Sens. Brian Schatz of Hawaii and Ben Cardin of Maryland.

“Federal employees have seen their standard of living deteriorate thanks to a three-year pay freeze, unpaid furloughs, and higher retirement contributions for newer workers,” Cox said. “A 3.8 percent pay raise would help federal employees recover some of that lost income, and encourage high caliber workers to work for the government and provide the high quality work that taxpayers expect.”

President Cox said the pay raise would help repay government workers for all of the lost wages they have endured.

“For years, federal employees have been bearing the brunt of policies that put slashing the deficit ahead of creating new jobs, and lost $159 billion in earnings because of it,” Cox said. “A 3.8 percent increase would provide employees with the fair and meaningful raise that they have earned for the first time this decade.”

Cox also applauded Sens. Schatz and Cardin and Rep. Connolly for ensuring that the 3.8 percent raise would apply both to General Schedule employees and hourly workers under the prevailing wage system.

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 670,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.

Well, guess they can just raise our taxes or print more money to pay for it.

Wonder what would happen to a private company that was $18 trillion in debt.

Fed employees are already paid 50-100% more than the private sector, not including perks, and retirement.

How much will your “raise” be this year? My disabled veteran compensation went up 1.7%.

frankly I was looking for the sarcasm tag....

we all know those "unpaid furloughs" meant nothing....that money was all recouped...

we all know the highest standard of living is among govt employees in the DC district, Maryland, northern Virginia...

but that aside, can my husband look forward to a nice 3.8% raise in his guard retirement?

since the system is so corrupt, I makes me want more and more to “legally” escape taxes....its our patriotic duty to not send these people one red cent more than absolutely necessary.

All kinds of people are getting freebies.

But I haven't gotten any since this whole recession started. Where's mine? I guess I could go for a health care subsidy but I refuse to do so.

it’s a bribery ploy to keep the employees loyal to their criminal masters

That means a 3.8% raise for Congress, too. I don’t see them turning it down.

“We got creamed in the elections! What can we do?”

“Let’s promise the government employees stuff that we know we can’t really give them. They’re so damn stupid, they’ll believe anything us Democrats tell them.”

What is the number, five of the nation’s seven wealthiest counties surround DC?

I look forward to the day when Detroit and DC are equally wealthy.

Yep, if I lived in a place like Austin, I think I’d find a way to go grocery shopping outside the city limits.

I just retired from a Civilian job - past 3 -4 years it was basically 0%. I thought it was going to match the military's 1% this year (Obama is an equal opportunity screwer).

I guess my retirements (military and civilian) and my social security will slowly drop behind as they go up less than the cost of living, but retirement is sweet enough that I don't care.
