Cat declawing bill could outlaw practice across New York State

New York State Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, known for showing her claws against animal cruelty, is pouncing on a new topic: cat declawing.

Rosenthal, who represents district 67, mainly covering Manhattan's Upper West Side, has penned a bill that would ban removing cats' claws unless necessary for medical reasons, the New York Daily News reports.

The bill has not yet been introduced to the state Senate, but it has been backed by the Humane Society of New York.

"Too often, people think that declawing is a simple surgery that removes a cat's nails—the equivalent of having your fingernails trimmed. Sadly, this is far from the truth," the Humane Society says on its website. "Declawing traditionally involves the amputation of the last bone of each toe. If performed on a human being, it would be like cutting off each finger at the last knuckle."

The Paw Project, a non-profit dedicated to educating the public about the effects of declawing, is also behind it. The group has successfully led campaigns to make declawing illegal in cities across California, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, and in 2014 helped get a law in Rhode Island enacted to prohibit landlords from requiring tenants to declaw their pets.

If Rosenthal's bill is enacted, New York would be the first in the country to introduce a state-wide ban on the practice.

Rosenthal's previous efforts include fighting to extend orders of protection to domestic animals and limiting cosmetic testing on animals. Just last month, her bill banning pet tattoos and piercings was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

NY State legislators have too much time on their hands. They cause more unnecessary legal mischief than anything else.

My cat is declawed. I figured a few days of soreness for him was better than a lifetime of me yelling & chasing him when he scratched the furniture. My vet admitted him for five days after the procedure for IV pain medicine & sedation. When he returned home, he did not appear to have any pain & has been a happy little boy ever since.

That was 6 years ago.

Sorry, but that’s not remotely true... I’ve seen those arguments and my experience is that they are just as nutty as the new agers who claim your thoughts can change the physical world around you.

Its a nice idea, and may work for some, but it does not work for all. I remember one such coworker who presented those arguments to me, and bragged about how her cat never scratched anything... then one day she came home to find her very expensive leather couch shredded...

As to cats only scratching people when they are abused, that’s another laughable one. Cats can and will scratch folks when not playing and were not being abused, the cats may not have intended to scratch anyone, but they have, and with small children in my home I am not going to have to deal with a child having a scar because of a cats decision to use or not use its claws while in contact with them.

The reality is, cats are PETS, and its up to the pet owner to decide what and how they wish to care for their pet. Declawing is not abuse, it is not neglect. The simple reality is, go ahead and pass these sorts of laws, and you will just increase the number of neglected cats in the world... but you can feel better at night because you will somehow think you have made cats lives better... ignoring the fact that you have condemned millions more to die in shelters or live on the streets.

No reach visible!

Both are for your convenience.

Both are destructive.

I like the way God made kids and cats; no modification desired.

Next up will be neutering. It will only be allowed on congressmen.

Oh yes, this thread has potential. But to REALLY make it interesting:

-we should debate which “tool” is best for said declawing

-should also speculate: Was this REALLY why the Civil War was fought? Excuse me, the “War of Northern Aggression”.

-didn’t cats EVOLVE over MILLIONS of years the use of said claws?

-are cats “naturally born” or just born with claws?

Finally...

-what does Pope Francis say the Catholic Church’s teaching is on this practice?

There. That should make this an interesting thread indeed. :)

My work is done, cheerio mates! I’m off to fight my way through DC traffic!

I like the good ol days when the family cat was not declawed and was kicked outside for most of the day to have the run of the neighborhood. He came in for food and play and to be petted. But lived half inside and half outside.

Oh.... he or she (I forget) was not neutered....the good ol days

My cats never come when they are called and I cant catch them. My plan is to have the right side legs cut off at the knees, so that when the cat runs away it will just run in circles...

The cat won’t mind. /s

"Really, all it takes is a little training of the cat owners instead—trim their toenails and make a scratching post available."-9YearLurker

Depends on the cat. I've had cats most of my life and enjoy the company of two right now. The older of the two cats is simply too lazy to scratch anything. The younger, female will not ....WILL NOT be reduced to scratching a post or corrugated cardboard panels either. She prefers my wallpaper, vinyl chair covers, and wall panels ($$$ owens corning fabric covered fiberglass panels).

We've treated the fabric with deterrent sorats, provided dozens of climbing towers and commercially available scratching posts to no avail. I've nailed the scratching posts to the walls she preferred - even spraying the posts with scents to attract her. She pulls the panels down and tears away at the repaired wall paper instead.

So far, I've been able to re-affix the fabric to each of the fiberglass panels, but eventually they will need to be replaced. I worry about her paws getting cut up by the fiberglass bits she paws at (feels like a splinter), but so far, no injury.

Keeping both kitties nails trimmed is the best option for us thus far.

I've adopted declawed cats in the past. I personally cannot bring myself to declaw my cat, despite the damage she creates.

FWIW, she uses those paws to embrace my cheeks every morning as I come downstairs. She reaches her paws through the railings to reach my cheeks - where the stairs bend 180 degrees at a higher level - just to say good morning as she pulls her wet nose to mine. She never uses her nails, just the pads of her feet to embrace us. Who would want to change that?

Why NY needs a law to address this is lost on me.

Yes, a 7 lb animal living its life in a heated and air conditioned 2500 square feet of space having all of its needs met for him is complete cruelty... send in the marines.

_____________________________________________________

Rephrase that to a 177 lb animal that walks on two legs and see how far that reasoning goes.

Cats CAN adjust to 24/7 confinement. But most are indoor/outdoor.

Cats are meant to be indoor/outdoor animals anyway.

My cat-only vet disagrees with you. Too many diseases/dangers out there for them. Outdoor cats live much shorter lives than indoor cats.

How come they never declaw their back feet?

When I was in college, we had this big tom cat and one day I wanted to throw him over the 2nd floor balcony of our apartment onto the tummy of a fat guy floating in an inner tube in the swimming pool.

Right after he went over the balcony, I learned the hard way that declawed cats can still claw!

The best way to declaw them is with a 6mm REM and an 87 grain match hollow point @ 3400 fps.

I’m surprised Leftist Boy Cuomo just didn’t enact a $100/claw removed tax.

Of course, no outdoors cat should ever be declawed (I don’t think any should at all), but indoor-only cats can be well handled with good treatment and an occasional nail trimming.
