Indiana Rep Andre carson will be the first Muslim to serve on House intelligence committee. House Democratic leader Pelosi announced she would name Carson to panel at weekly caucus meeting on Tuesday, according to two senior House Democratic leadership aides.
Indiana Democratic Rep. Andre Carson would be "formally announced" soon as part of the roster Democrats on the intelligence panel, according to these aides.
Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison was the first Muslim member elected to Congress in 2006. Carson became the second Muslim to serve in the House when was elected in a special election in 2008 to replace his grandmother, Rep. Julia Carson, after she died in 2007.

John Lewis, a Democrat from Georgia. Carson came off the House floor and told reporters his story about health care protesters hurling racial slurs during their walk from the Cannon Building to the chambers.[18] Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart offered a $100,000 reward for any proof of these accusations.[19] Although audio and video recordings of the event have been posted online, no proof has yet been provided by those who made the accusations, and the reward remains unclaimed.[20]
On August 28, 2011, Carson told a gathering of supporters when referring to the Tea Party movement “This is the effort that we’re seeing of Jim Crow,” Carson said. “Some of these folks in Congress right now would love to see us as second-class citizens. Some of them in Congress right now of this Tea Party movement would love to see you and me... hanging on a tree.”[21] Carson declined calls to resign, reaffirming, “I stand on the truth of what I spoke,” and clarified that his comments were directed at certain tea party leaders and not the tea party as a whole.[22]

It's simple.
If Pelosi had a direct family member - a son, or a grandson, or a granddaughter - who might actually be placed in harms way, who's life might actually depend on national secrets being kept out of the hands of our enemies... she would never have allowed this to happen.
But because it's some other parent or grandparent who is going to lose a child as a result of this extremely irresponsible decision, she isn't bothered by the risk.
She can take chances with people's lives for a political payoff (and possibly other more concrete types of payoff as well) as long as those lives belong to people not in her immediate family.
Universal military service means that every member of congress has family members who's "ass is on the line."
