Grace Brewer says she never thought she would be without health insurance at this stage of her life. "I'm a casualty of Obamacare," says Brewer, 60, a self-employed chiropractor in the Kansas City, Kansas, area.
She wanted to keep the catastrophic health insurance plan she once had, which she says fit her needs. But under the Affordable Care Act, the government's health care reform law, the plan was discontinued because it did not comply with the law's requirements, and her bills doubled to more than $400 a month. "I wanted a minimal plan and Im not allowed to have it," she says. "That seems like an encroachment on my freedom."
**SNIP**
Though Brewer could pay less for a plan if she were to accept a subsidy from the federal government, she refuses. "I want to pay my own way," she says. "I will not take a handout."
Her sentiment is unusual, but brokers say they do hear from clients who are eligible for subsidies which are based on household income and not assets but want no part of them. Health officials have been boasting that 6.6 million people have enrolled in health coverage through state or federal marketplaces created under the Affordable Care Act, but in sharp contrast stands a small group of Americans who say they want nothing to do with the plans, even if they would save money. Their reasons vary: Some are protesting Obamacare, while others simply feel it's unethical to accept taxpayer dollars to pay for health insurance.

Sounds a bit like my story.
Resistance is futile.
The plan is designed to make independence nearly impossible for most people. Future generations won’t even consider it.
Just like Social Security has done.
People who now have deductibles of $6000-$12000 won’t be going to the doctor unless the problem is severe. That’s already happening in our circle of friends.
Those deductibles are pretty much unpayable.
Most people do not have that type of cash on hand.
And unless I am mistaken, insurance will not pay a dime until the deductible is already paid, so if one cannot pay it, one is screwed.
The real irony with the sky-high deductibles is that this fiasco was sold to the unsuspecting as THE solution to our current system where medical crises bankrupt so many families. I challenge the average family on Obamacare to be able to plunk down $10-12K a year before receiving any insurance help. And that’s while paying close to $1000 a month premium.
Look for more folks to just simply say “no”.
Yeah, I can’t do it. I am pretty much screwed.
I have a bum ticker and I’m a diabetic, so my monthly rates would be very high because of those conditions.
Secondly, I am unemployed, but I have assets and live off of a very modest capital investment income.
But since my yearly taxable income is low, if I so much as even attempt to sign up, I’m going to be put on Medicaid where my assets will then be at risk if something major happens to me, which is quite likely.
So I do not want to put myself in a position where the government will seize my assets upon my death, and I really cannot afford to pay monthly premiums on top of my monthly bills and then a sky high deductible in case of emergency.
Furthermore, it is also my understanding that Obungholecare does not cover all expenses even after the deductible is paid, and that there will still be considerable bills left over.
So I am pretty much at the point of well I’m just going to live out my time as well as I can, and when my machinery fails, then it’ll be time for me to go home, and that’s it.
My wife turned 65 in December and went on Medicare. Just in time as her insurance was going to be more than double last year’s rate.
It's atrocious.
Not having more of your personal information available to be shared is priceless.
Grace Brewer is a brave patriot making far more of a sacrifice without coverage than I'm facing. My high-deductible HSA policy is one of the few that was grandfathered under Obamacare and has survived (for now).
That is not to say my healthcare coverage escaped the tremendous increase in premiums caused by Obamacare. Blue Cross has doubled my monthly premium since Obamacare was signed to keep pace with the unsubsidized cost of high-deductible plans on the government exchange. How pathetic it is to be considered lucky to have a catastrophic plan that covers 100% of costs after a $5000 deductible.
Curse Obama and the Democrat Party for imposing this wealth redistribution burden on middle class taxpayers fraudulently hidden under the guise of "healthcare reform".
I have a cousin who signed up for Obamacare. She works full time but doesn’t make a lot of money. She is subsidized down to where her premiums are like $2 per month............but she has a $5k deductible so it is the same as not having insurance to her. She can’t pay the deductible.......but! The insurance company is still collecting the premiums that the stat/fed whoever is paying for a policy that will never be used except maybe catastrophic. How many others are out there just like her?
And their $2.00 premiums are based on me being able to pay my unsubsidized $800.00 a month premiums, with the same deductible, which I can't afford, so I now go without and neither of us are any better off.
