Bernard states later in the article that if the people are in the streets to support freedom of speech that’s good. He gets it, the people are not there for the magazine but for freedom of speech.
It’s EASY to defend speech you agree with. Where the rubber meets the road, and genuine passion for free speech shows is not disagreeing with James Carville, or Ann Coulter and claiming “See, I support free speech”.
It’s when we permit (we don’t agree with it, but it goes) things we viscerally despise, to be presented in the public forum for all to discuss that we show our TRUE passion for the freedom to speak one’s mind. No matter how petty, offensive or distasteful, speech MUST be free.
If you don’t like Hustler mag, don’t buy it! Think that Free Republic is a bunch of far-right radicals? Don’t read it! Any thing less is the tyranny of the majority, or the loudest, or the most sensitive, or the politically correct, or...

So cultist that they hate most those of their own in sub-cults, a la “Life of Brian”. Social life is also entirely inside that loop. No, the only approval they want comes from inside their own society. Sort of like the Amish but much more annoying.

The guy sounds like an arrogant jack ass. Heaven forbid people offer condolences and well wishes despite not reading their trashy newspaper. Yes, you can only offer condolences if you are an avid reader of their trash mag. What a simple minded fool. It’s not a shock that he works for another liberal rag as well.
They never were about diplomacy.
Well this is divinely orchestrated. Sometimes God arranges for people to say no to blessings so that the need for their judgment becomes obvious.
Some of this is gratuitous, as illogical (and adamant) as the devil himself.
Some of this is due to a general mistaken bitterness at “religion” all of which they have lazily stuffed into the same box.
At any rate, they were offered friendship, they refused it. Now they have little reason to complain about their “karma.”
These guys don’t deserve to powder Voltaire’s wig.
