Fiscal Policy: In this time of political partisanship, the two parties at last have found something they can agree on: raising the gas tax. It's a truly awful idea, and might get Republicans kicked out of office.
It's shocking that Republicans, who won the last election by promising limited government and lower taxes, would in their first week back in power make noises about joining tax-and-spend liberal Democrats to raise the 18-cents-a-gallon gas tax. But that's exactly what they're doing.
Suddenly, a number of Republicans who should all know better are saying they'll "consider" a gasoline tax hike, especially if paired with something they want badly. A hike in the gas tax, they say, could "finance" other things like a big-spending transportation bill, or even corporate tax cuts.
A headline in The Hill captures it perfectly: "Momentum builds in Congress for raising the federal gas tax."
Well, if the GOP is serious about being a party of limited government and low taxes, it shouldn't raise gasoline taxes; it should cut spending. And don't tell voters you can't cut.

Cuz obama wants him to, why else?
uh, because they are liars?
100% true
The GOPe has been around the commie ‘RATS for too long. They can’t help themselves. Tax, tax, tax.
Even after November, its status quo all over again.
Stop spending the money in the general fund like SS is, and stop spending it on light rail, bike paths, and other boondoggles that have nothing to do with actual transportation.
Because they’re under the false impression that the highway trust fund must be continued, when it should be brought to zero.
Since when was the Republican Party the “Party of Limited Government”???
Exactly...Rats and RINOs see big bucks in raising gas taxes that can be used for other pet projects.
If they raise the gasoline tax, they should use the money to subsidize shale oil development and NOTHING else. US shale oil can’t compete against Saudi oil at this price. I would support a gas tax hike if they used the revenue to keep shale oil production up.
With the RINO’s and RATS, he has got the votes.
2016 May be another throw the bums out election.
the party of limited government
is pushing this big new tax on us
because
Speaker Boner misunderstood
it to mean
the governent party that limits us
1) The Republicans are not the party of limited government.
2) All Members of Congress and Senators work for the leviathan state.
3) The leviathan state is past the tipping point in terms of borrowing - revenues must increase year after year just to stay afloat.
4) When the crash comes - when, not if - they all have a lamppost problem.
Does that answer the question?
How does one “finance” a tax cut? Never made much sense to me.
Well, if the GOP is serious about being a party of limited government
That’s a big IF. And the answer is they’re NOT serious.
Name the Liberals!!!
Tax tax tax to buy votes for Democrats.
To get back at us lousy FReepers for calling Boner spineless and squishy!/sarc
