Joe Manchin: We could override Obama veto on Keystone bill
Washington Times ^ | 1-9-15 | Ben Wolfgang

As a key Senate committee cleared legislation approving the Keystone XL oil pipeline, a prominent supporter of the project said Thursday he believes the chamber could have enough votes to override a presidential veto of the bill.

Sen. Joe Manchin, West Virginia Democrat, told his colleagues he believes the bill approving the pipeline could garner 67 votes, the number needed to overcome a veto by the president.

Obama is going to give climate change as a reason for his veto.

A veto over-ride would be terrific! And so early in this Congress, it is a good precedent.

Why didn’t they do this on Obamacare?

That would be sweet.

No one has hurt the Dem party more than Obama. And these Senators are really on their own. There is no benefit to them for being an Obama loyalist...not at this point.

Put away all hope for this. Not because the GOP can’t, but because they won’t. Why? Because it would be good for the country and their power comes through crisis. You’ll see that I’m right. Because they’ve showed me who they are.

First off, because the Senate never voted to rescind Obamacare. Until about a week ago, the Senate was run by the Democrats.

Second off, no Democrat (or no more than a tiny handful) would vote to overturn Obamacare. It’s their baby.

It would be a good way for Manchin to campaign for governor, that's for sure. BO is even less popular in WV than he is here in SW Pennsylvania.

The war on coal even has many UMW type Democrats down on him.

A veto override would put some life back into our Republic and would permanently cut the legs off beneath the America-hating, capitalism-hating lame duck Marxist president. Go, Manchin, GO!!

He already was governor. But that aside, he could take on Hillary in 2016. That would be fun. I hope she gets a bevy of challengers.

The war on coal even has many UMW type Democrats down on him.

If the GOP was smart, it would seize the opportunity and try to turn these UMW Democrats into UMW Republicans. Nixon was successful in this arena, and so was Reagan.

But Nixon and Reagan were tough, and clever. The current GOP leadership, not so much.

Wasn’t the original Keystone vote one short of 60? And the last congress was 45 R. So 59-45 = 14 Ds voted for Keystone last time.

Now they need 67-54 = 13 D votes to override. So it should be doable.

Or is my math wrong here?

Will never happen. Name 13 other Dems who will vote to override their protected Obama. Most of the Dems who might have voted (and I mean only might ) lost their elections. the rest are die hard liberals who are protecting the environment and more importantly protecting Obama from embarrassment. I’m not sure the bill will even pass the Senate since 5 other dems who have to go against their leader

Manchin must be a very lonely man in Washington.

He was governor, but thought the opportunity to face voters only every six years rather than every four was too good to pass up. After rubbing elbows with some world class idiots in the U.S. Senate, he wants to be governor again so he can call the shots.

Yeah, he might run as VP on a Hillary ticket, but I think his ego is just too damn big for that.

I surmise the petulant POS in the WH will retaliate against the American people in the most painful way possible if he gets over ridden on his veto

Some of the RATS that voted for KXL the first time aren’t there now.

I doubt there will even be a vote. Most everything will still die in the Senate because the Dems will stick together on cloture votes.
