A California father was arrested after throwing a party for his daughter’s 18th birthday over the weekend. The theme: “Liv’s Playboy Mansion.”

San Diego County sheriff’s deputies told 10 News that 150 to 200 teens were in attendance Olivia Lake’s birthday party. Many were drinking alcohol and some girls were dressed in lingerie and wearing bunny ears.

Complaints from neighbors led sheriff’s deputies to shut the party down, and Olivia’s father Jeff Lake was arrested and charged with violating the social host ordinance in Poway, Calif. According to 10 News, that ordinance makes it illegal to host a party where underage individuals consume alcohol. It comes with a possible six month jail sentence.

Well, we’d be tickled to have you here. You would find that we have trout too, and other species. And, we are actually allowed to fish for them without a hoard of greenweenies protesting the catching of fish. I have deer, racoon, wild turkey and non-venomous snakes in my suburban yard. I saw a coyote across the street the other day. I’m 10 minutes from the city center. My commute is 10 minutes.

Comparative statistics do not show you what we know to be true about the Midwest, i.e. if you are well employed in Cincinnati Ohio, your standard of living is a multiple of what you would experience in Redding CA even though Redding is a small secular town without the arts and cultural amenities that are found in Cincinnati. And, for the most part, one does not have to put up with the antics of politicians and activists that make California such a kooky place. My children went to two of the best schools in the US, yes, public schools. Right here in Cincinnati. And, they did not have to take Islam as a mandatory core requirement or use the bathrooms with persons of the opposite sex.

People in California sometimes do not realize just how bad they have it. The state has ratcheted down a little bit every year, gotten a little more expensive every year, and a little more restrictive every year, and a little more kooky every year, and perhaps they do not notice it. The glamor of the past century is long gone. We don’t envy Californians; we pity them. If I never see a film industry celebrity in person it will be fine with me. I don’t drink wine, but if I did, I am sure it would ship here just fine. However, we have local produce and markets with things that are not grown on a desert floor. Perhaps not as abundantly, but vastly superior. You should try a tomato grown naturally in Ohio. Or, some real fresh corn. Not produced with chemicals and irrigation in the desert. I have a 40,000 gallon in ground pool and no one bats an eye if I decide to empty and refill it in order to touch up the tile or paint.

I see that you have to stay. But, at least give your children a chance to break free. Send them to college out here and let them experience something different than the four generations you have invested there. They will be happier for it. And, again, see if you can maintain a sense of humor about the inevitable cracks.

All the animals you mentioned plus foxes, bobcats, and
an occasional bear wander through both my front and back
yards. I live 6 mi out of a small town and have 360 degrees
of oak, ponderosa pine, doug fir, and manzanita around my
house. If I had kids I would send them to local public
schools because around here they don’t have quite the
dastardly curriculum as you have been led to believe.
When they were old enough I would try to sell them on
attending Cal Poly. It is 350 miles away on the Central
Coast and San Luis Obispo is considered one of the
friendliest towns in America (ask Oprah). The climate
and geography is different than here and unlike the one size
fits all landscape in Ohio.

Thirty-one years ago from this moment I was in Cleveland
for 3 days and nights. Today, if I want 10 degree temperature
and snow I can drive up I-80 for an hour and change to
Donner Summit and maybe wait for dark.

Anton, my friend, just what are your sources of info
about California? Obviously you see and read news.
Have you been here? Where/when?
Have you traveled through here? Where/when?
Have you been to rural California and spent
time with some locals?

Culture? Every podunk town has some kind of festival
The two towns closest to me have Cornish Christmas and
Victorian Christmas plus the most beautiful county
fairgrounds in the world. Used to be bars, gas stations,
and churches round here. Now it is mainly churches. If
I need a dose of higher culture (and I don’t) I drive
an hour to Sacramento or for highbrow culture 3 hrs
to SF.

Keep the pity rolling in, Anton.

Put me on your ping list.

Don’t put Darksheare on your ping list and
don’t tell me if you put him on anyway and
don’t tell me if you already put him on and
don’t tell me if you don’t put me on your ping list.
