What I’ve Learned From Dropping Fox News
The Federalist ^ | 01/07/2015 | By Greg Scandlen

Posted on 01/07/2015 5:52:58 PM PST by SeekAndFind

I switched to Dish from Comcast about three months ago. Dumb. I was hoping to save some money and don’t care for Comcast’s politics. I knew satellites have some reception problems during storms, but was willing to live with that. I had no idea they would drop the only channel worth watching on television.

Now, I don’t like everything about Fox. Sean Hannity is too strident for my tastes, and Bill O’Reilly is a blowhard bully, but I’m less interested in the prime-time programming than in the daytime news, now that I’m retired and at home most days.

Of course, being retired means I’m far from the “key demographic” advertisers crave, so no one really cares what I think. The advertisers are right: I don’t spend much money these days. I have all the clothes and furniture I will ever need, we mostly eat at home, I’m not a drinker, and I’m certainly not buying expensive gifts to impress a love interest—we’ve been together long enough that she is beyond being impressed by anything I might do.

But I am, and have always been, a news junkie. Even in elementary school my favorite topic was “current events,” and I’ve been active in politics my whole life. So, unlike most of the public, I relish the “24-hour news cycle.” So, life without Fox News has been educational.

This is what I have learned so far.

The Other Outlets Are Shallow and One-Sided

Both MSNBC and CNN are far more one-sided than I ever realized.

I always watch the BBC world news in the mornings for better global coverage.

Just “now” discovering the other news outlets are one-sided??

I was a huge news junkie for decades. Started in my early teen years. I still have some VHS recordings I made in the 1980s from CNN. All sorts of things, including bits on the Reagan-Mondale race. And when FoxNews started around 1996, it was practically the default position on my tv-set, and stayed that way for years.

But I don’t know. The recent years of watching the GOP-E backstab Palin, seeing FoxNews morph into the Karl Rove beltway establishment network, and going all agog over Mitt Romney, with various talking-heads pushing insanity from amnesty to fag-marriage... my thirty-plus year long interest in watching the news and its coverage of the political scene just literally DIED. Dead as a doornail. Nowadays, even the mere thought of turning on FoxNews, much less the cretinous MSNBC or CNN, just makes me shudder with revulsion. I’ll go a full month without watching a single minute of news. I no longer even make a point to tune in appearances of Palin or Cruz, like I used to.

In a way, I guess I just no longer feel invested in what becomes of the country as a whole. That’s probably the root cause.

This writer does not seem especially bright. Did he not already know that about O’Reilly and Hannity? My favorite FOX News program is Special Report. I would like to watch “The Five” more, but Beckel makes me too angry. Redeye used to be pretty funny, but I’m tired of leftie Andy Levy claiming to be a “Libertarian”. Why do so many leftists call themselves “Libertarians”?

Fox will return. At least Dish tries to negotiate for better prices instead of bending over for Fox. Though we went without TCM on Dish and when it came back my bill went up $5.

BBC, Sky News, RT and the local news which is an ABC affiliate, all online for the past year in this house.

Here’s a website that lists local stations by state and by country. Not all have live streaming all the time, but during times of local crisis at least one in a market will have something.

Actually, I come to Free Republic more than I watch ANY television news.

Same here. I listen to Cavuto on XM while I'm driving. I have Dish and haven't missed FNC a bit. I don't mind that Dish isn't grabbing their ankles for Fox. It just means they're trying to keep my rates down.

I toyed with going to Direct TV but was afraid I would switch and then Direct TV would do the same thing. Also I can’t get The Blaze on Direct TV.

The females talk too fast and, really, they are all emotion and no facts.

The females make up “what ifs” and their knowledge of news history is nonexistent.

I need logic and MEN!

I dislike Sean Hannity too ... If I watch him on TV. I find News in general is best read rather than a telecast.

Like Sarah Palin is great. I just can’t stand listening to her voice.

I still miss N.E.T. The real Conservative Television Network. Too bad Weyrich couldn’t get the sponsorship needed to make it a success. I’d much rather pay for a N.E.T. type network than any news network satellite or cable TV offers today.

I do like foreign news stations more so than domestic — only because they aren't as enamored of Obama as the slobbering media here. I notice that on some outlets Obama is rarely mentioned, or if he is, it's more of a passing allusion. They really don't like him and don't care what he does or says.

I can’t speak for all the other males out there, but one reason I watch FOX is because I wanna watch the pretty girls.... (shallow but true ).

One name says it all:

Andrea Tantaros

That knocked me out, too. Strident? Really? WMAL dropped his show, but he seemed last I heard to just want to get along with everybody, especially the kingpins of the establishment GOP.

The funny thing is most conservatives don’t even like or watch FOX News yet that’s the running narrative from the left. They think we take that network for gospel when we all know it’s Establishment TV. Personally, I like BBC News and the Russian news network RT. They do a far better job of reporting the news than any American network does these days.
