In the Mississippi Delta town of Tchula, there’s a fading columned mansion that once belonged to Sara Virginia Jones, the daughter of a local plantation dynasty. Its walls were lined with nearly 400 works by artists as prominent as Paul Cezanne, Marc Chagall, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Salvador Dali, and Andy Warhol.

Then, in the 1990s, the house changed hands. Today, it is filled with framed photos of the current owner—Tchula’s controversial first black mayor, Eddie Carthan, who was in office from 1977 to 1981—posing with U.S. presidents Carter, Clinton, and Obama and the Nation of Islam’s Louis Farrakhan.

A wonderful story. Although my most recent immigrant ancestor was Irish, I can identify with it.

Once when applying for a dumb retail job after a professional career, the interviewer implied that I would not be able to get along with the (majority black) staff because of my education. I told him my grandfather was illiterate, I was the first college graduate in the family, and I do not forget where I came from and how hard everyone worked to get me there. (Not that it reduced his bias one iota.)

No, that’s not really what has hurt the Delta. Delta cotton would be exported all over the world if its production costs were low enough. The main factor in the decline of the Delta’s cotton industry is that cotton production costs are much lower in places like Arizona and the plains of west Texas.

A lady at W-Mart said that the EBT crowd turns in kids Christmas gifts to get credit on "gift" cards and then uses them to buy beer and other necessities - she said it's pretty sad.

I agree with some of what you wrote. The jobs excuse is BS. Rural kids aren’t shootin’, beatin’, rapin’ their fellow towns people.

And yes, we taxpayers raise a race and culture that is racist and violent. We feed them and allow them to bulk up on our cost so they can terrorize the whole Country.

And nobody is stopping it.
